    You need a D5 and a D500.
    LOL.
Actually @heartyfisher I do not think you need a D500 for any of those images if I have to be serious about it. All of these are static shots in high ISO situations. You would be better served with a D5 or D750 than the D500. Compared to the 7200, you are paying double for the D500 mainly for the increased speed. If you don't need the speed, save yourself some money on a body and think about the 58 1.4 lens instead. It would be ideal for your low light photography. Just my 2 cents. I'm getting a D500 anyway just because I want one :P

When it is out we will see about this but I the FX sensor size in the D750 should produce better high ISO images than the DX sensor size in the D500. YET, there may be some magic in those new 20.9mp sensors since Nikon rates the native ISO range for the D500 at 51,200 and the D750 at only 12,800; two stops lower. How can that be? Magic or hype? Some very significant advancement in those two new sensors? Note that the D5 native high ISO is 102,400 one stop greater then the D500 which reflects the usual FX is one stop better than DX rule of thumb. As for me I want both a D500 and a D5. But that's not going to happen.

I would just wait until they apply the same magic on a D760 sensor.

WestEndFoto: Maybe whatever magic contributed to a two stop high ISO jump will be reflected in the follow-up to the D810, D750, D610 and D7200 bodies. If so, that would be terrific!

Why does he need a D500 when having two is better. Pays to have a backup. :D =))

Dunno.. the "magic" in the D4/s & Df has pretty much stayed with that old sensor...
maybe this time it will spread along the range .. but I doubt it...

Well, Nikon could always put the D500 sensor into the follow-up of the D7200 for example.

Hard to see the other DX DSLR bodies move to a lower resolution. They'll stay with those 24 Mp, or maybe go higher.
Nikon will have to create a dF-DX to find a place for the new 20 Mp sensor.

I imagine They would have put a 24 megapixel sensor in the D500 if they could have, but ran into data bandwidth issues with the framerate.

    @framer your correct. No one "needs" a D500....they "want" a D500.

@Dredden85 - yup, got to help your friends. =D>

Maybe I don't need a D500 but sure feel I could benefit from the higher ISO performance and the frame rate. It could help me improve my skills and I want to become a better photographer. So could I improve with out one? Yes with more practice I slowly improve but I feel pushing my D5100 in indoor and night sports. So if I really don't need one it still would be nice.

I know my son has a pre-order Myself I have to wait to see if my farm can support this purchase. A D7300 would work quite well for me. Lens are a big part of the formula for sure and I have a mix of FF and DX.

I never thought I would go DX after using D700 an D3 but the D500 is just that sweet, after getting to handle one tonight. The four F/1.4 FX primes are now: 35mm, 50mm, 85mm & 135mm for all intents and purposes, not too bad of focal lengths. Now the sting of no real nice wide angle DX primes is biting me though. I will pre-order this week. Nikon did a nice job with the launch parties.

Nice update @IronHeadSlim. Did you insert your own memory card to take some pictures home?

I'm puzzled why are you considering D500 having the D4?

The rational behind buying a D500 is pretty easy.

Have a 200-500 F 5.6 that you bought for wildlife on FF ? You basically must buy a D500 for frame rate and reduced field of view for that task.

I will wait till the dust has settled and buy one...
