I'm sure you will have an awesome kit there VisualUniverse. To be honest, I would love a D500 too.

Some times I could just scream at KR's "over simplification". He posted this today regarding the D500 and D750...check out that last paragraph:

    D500 or D750?

Since the prices are similar, people ask which is better.

    Easy!

The D500 is for sports, birds and action.

D750 is for broad landscapes and things that don't move that fast.

The D500 is all about its frame rate and catching things in motion — nothing more. Of course for birds, sports and action, that's very important.

The D750 is for things not moving as fast.

There is little to no picture quality difference. The biggest difference between FX and DX is that DX has deeper depth of field, and FX has less depth of field.
    ============================================
I went from D7100 (DX) and added the D750 (FX). The IQ and DR is different and the D750 works much better in low light.

Well, given that he is a little prone to over-simplification, I actually think he has said far worse than that in his career (IMHO). I have both bodies and just this last weekend I looked at the EXIF of an image that I would have sworn was a D750 shot and found that it was the D7100. The shot in question was shot with preserving the highlights in mind but after blacks and shadows were adjusted was still good enough to be included in my ten best for my accreditation adjudication in April. DX is superb these days.

I'm almost up to lens selection for the D500. If I must choose just one travel lens, which one is sharpest?
    A) 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6 G AF-S VR, DX or
    B) 16-80 mm f/2.8-4E ED VR?

Can't help you with sharpness, but that is a tough choice - lose 2mm of the wide end or gain 60mm on the long. I'd go 16-80 every time and as both of these are supposedly very sharp. I'd just get the 70-200 f4 and 200-500 f5.6, 60 macro and call it done.

And that's why I went with DX. if I had some clue to the D500's existence I'd not have bought D7200. Albeit the D7200 is a fine camera and I love the IQ and the DR and kicked last DSLR I've used, Rebel T2i (if you even call that POS a DSLR.) right out to curve but I'd have preferred the D500

@nukeEX2 - all good points. For the average consumer and most advance amateurs the DX body makes for great images. I seldom recommend FX to people that ask for guidance on selecting a DSLR. The point I was making was KR over simplifies stuff some times. There is more to it then what he says.

That is an excellent recommendation. Some people would prefer the longer reach for a general carry around lens but the 16-80mm is such a nice range. Looking forward to seeing DxO results to compare against the old 17-55mm F2.8. Loved that lens and it gave me over 10 years of outstanding images.

OK, I will blame my bad pictures on you two (spraynpray and Photobug) and go with the 16-80 for my travel lens. If I carry two cameras theD810 will have the 24-70 and the D500 will have the 70-200 f2.8. But when I carry only one camera it will be the D500-16-80 and it is your fault. :-)

16-80 is a great DX mid-zoom lens, pretty much designed with the D500 in mind I would bet.
On an somewhat unrelated note, but on-topic. I'm signed up to attend a D5/D500 launch event at my local camera shop on Feb 10th. Anything anyone wants me to look at specifically? I'm already planning on bringing my own memory cards and taking a few pics :) Perhaps I should bring my 16-80 as well...

I would love to see a super blow up taken with the D500 and 16-80. Say 4 feet by 8 feet. I know I can do it with the D810/24-70/f2.8 and I would like to see the limits of the D500-16-80.

Can you bring one of the D7000/7100/7200 cameras and shoot a similar pic to the D500 so we have something objective to compare it to? Thanks in advance! ^:)^

That'd be my next lens buy for my D7200. I have one DX and one FX prime 40mm macro f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.8 but I don't have zoom lens yet. I know it's f2.8 to f/4 but I'd treat it as straight f/4 lens. :D I've been also eyeballing the 70-200mm f/4 any tips, suggestions, or even an alternatives? :))

High ISO comparison to D7100, D7200.

Auto AF Fine Tune. What's the process? How well does it work? Multiple focal lengths or still just one?

How accurate is the eye detection (assuming it has it) when looking through the viewfinder?

How well does continuous AF work when shooting Live View video?

Good suggestions all. I'll bring my D7200 with the 16-80. I'll hit the high ISO for sure. I didn't realize it had eye detection?

D750 has it, so I'm assuming D500 does too. Auto-area AF needs to be turned on for it to work. I think there's some other custom setting too that enables/disables it.

I'm curious because my results using it on D750 were rather unreliable.

Are you referring to face detection? Page 335 in the manual. If so, I'll play with that if I can. I'm assuming I'll be lucky to get 5min with the beast, since there will probably be 50-100 folks there...

Yeah. Obviously, this is low priority compared to stuff like high ISO though. Thanks!

Go for the Nikon 70-200 over the Tamron equivalent. If you can't afford the new model, nothing wrong with the original VR. Have had mine for a long time and it's reliable and the VR is fine. If your patient, you can get this one for less than half the price of the new model on eBay. Just my humble opinion.

I suppose this question has been answered above but I can't find it, so.....will NX-D be ready to open D500 RAW files or will it require an update or ???
