Considering the lens that I would likely shoot with it, I would take the D5 to avail myself of all the resolution that the lens has to offer. For example, 24-70. Plus if I am shooting it on a DX, 36-105 seems like an odd range.

My first lens was a 35-105mm zoom that I used on personal camera (Minolta SRT-100) for quite some time. I still have it (and the SRT), but it doesn't work on my Nikons. And considering the number of 24-70mm lenses Nikon has sold compared to the number of FX bodies, a good portion of those lenses are being used on DX bodies.

I find my tamron 24-70 F2.8 on my DX is quite nice for street and general portraits.

    One week to go!
Anyone spot any early D500 reviews?

What are the fastest memory cards for the D500?

The Lexar Professional 2933x XQD 2.0, if the D5 is any indication. The Sony is a close second. There are no others.

I saw the XQD comparison. What about the SD card?

In theory, any SD UHS-II card will work, but since nobody has a D500 there are no speed tests yet. The card difference is 150MB/s (XQD) vs 100MB/s (SD), so my ultimate answer is XQD. I already have the lexar, and a reader.

I just ordered two Lexar 2933x XQDs. I use XQDs in my D4. Do I need a new reader for the 2933x XQDs?

    What reader do you have?

I have a Sony XQD Model MRW-E80. I cannot remember for sure, but I think it came with one of my older cameras (D3?).

The D3 only used CF. The XQD format was released along side the D4, so I don't think there was anything that used it before that.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I looked at the reviews for this product on b&h, and one guy who wrote his review on 4/5/2016 says that he tried it with the lexar 2933x 128GB XQD card and it worked (for him). so maybe it will work? worst comes to worst you buy another adaptor :expressionless:

A lot of people are going to buy it because it has 4K and 10 FPS. Not that they are pro shooters, just a reasonable DX camera at a reasonable price. No more no less. Yes, some have been waiting for this but the masses will see it as a chance to enter the pro body club with minimal investment. Nothing wrong with that.

    Tell me again -- why do I need a D5, if I have D500?

With the rumours that Nikon have compromised the D5's low ISO IQ to get better DR in Hi ISO images, I see the D500 as selling out pretty soon.

spraynpray: Wouldn't you expect Nikon to have also compromised the D500's low ISO IQ to get better DR at high ISO? I do. So I think we need to think of a two body world going forward. One for the best low ISO dynamic range in the format (DX or FX) and one for the best high ISO dynamic range. Thus, I say use a D810 with a D5 and a D7200 with a D500. But we will see. I may try using a D800 with a D500 just to get two bodies with similar controls.

The 810 plus 500 is my plan. When you need the DR, e.g. for static landscapes, etc. the 810 is hard to beat. When you need reach for action, its likely the 500 will be hard to beat. The only thing I may add in addition to the 500 this year is a Canon mirrorless, as it would hopefully allow for completely silent shooting...which is something that is difficult with either the 810 or 500.

No, I don't Donald, I think that would be asking too much of the DX sensor but I could easily be wrong.

My argument with the Canonista that gleefully reported the review to me was that the D5 is the 'get the image at all costs' camera, but was thinking I wish it was more conventional as it is possible that they will lose sales because of it.

I am an advocate of the two body (DX and FX) system, but I am happy with the D7100/D750 for the foreseeable future. I expect my next cameras will be mirrorless.
    Always learning.

My thoughts are the D500 and what may replace the D810. By the time I can afford another camera the replacement for the D810 should be here. I will look at it and then decide if it is really what I want or if it will be a D810. I hope to shoot both formants but the D7200 or its replacement looks good if I have to pass on FX.

Oh no. I just said in another thread that my next camera would be mirrorless, but the D500 is sooo tempting! :s

I still think the technology is not "there" yet for fast action, so the D500 will have some usable years on it before it hits the rubbish bin. Take a look at this comparison below, which pits the very best and latest mirrorless technology versus the old Canon 7D. To me its still clear that you can't really shoot action with these new cameras yet, but for stills they are probably better versus regular DSLRs now. I am hopeful that Canon will release a serious and silent mirrorless camera this year, as there are a bunch of great EF lenses that I would like to use with such a camera. My hunch is that Nikon will eventually follow, but not for another year or two before releasing a serious mirrorless competitor.

I was looking at the D500 images and am kind of disappointed.
Look at this image at ISO 100. Its pretty blurry when viewed at 100% and not downsized for the screen. I hope that not all pics are going to be like this and hopefully its just someone not using a fast enough shutter speed on a non-VR lens...

Yeah, there's some camera shake or misfocus or something going on with the ISO100 one. Have a look at some of the others like the ISO400 one and it's much sharper.

By the way, does anyone know if the D500 has an OLPF or not?
