Maybe a D900/D9000 thread should come before it is time for a D5s/D500s thread.
Putting the D810 and D7200 in D5 and D500 bodies for the high MP versions.

    Wishful thinking.

Dont think that will happen but high MP versions ... sounds right .. say 50+MP D900 FX and 36MP D9000 DX.. yup sounds good... add 8K vid to the mix.. Full Flippy screen and touch.

Since the D500 is quite weather resistant.. which are the most weather resistant lenses that you would pair with it to use ... say on a beach in a torrential downpour?

My prediction: The D5/D500 pairing will be a smash hit and in two years Nikon will release a D5s/D500s pairing. Both will have an improved expeed processor which will be able to handle 24mp at the same frame rate. Probably about 1/2 stop improved IQ at all ISOs. That's about it. The mid cycle refresh is a minor refresh.

Dont think they will need a MP boost.. but may get a DR boost especially the flack the D5 is getting for low ISO DR. we still dont know if the lower ISO lower DR attribute is on the D500. D5S will also probably get snapbridge. and I think integrated wireless flash should be a must for both models. wonder what else an "S" version can add ? wireless Mic ?

Agreed. Any step backwards is a bad thing so I agree the low ISO performance needs to be improved even though it is Nikon's 'get the image at any cost' body.
    Always learning.

There is a thread on DPR about the ISO performance versus the 750 and 7200. Looks better than the 7200 but not quite as good as the 750. Pretty much expecting that given that the pixels are so much smaller on the 500. Would be interesting though to see the performance at 100% crop versus the 810.

@manhattenboy .. that image link does not help without context. Can you provide a link to the discussion or provide details like ISO or if its pushed or aperture/speed etc...

DR Samples looks great ! High ISO(6400) sample you linked in the first post looks nice and as expected (between D7200 and D750).

I feel the NAS rising !!

Now let's see the difference in really low light. In good light, the noise on my D7100 is ridiculously good but the difference is bigger in low light.

I just received my D500 and will bring it to St. Augustine for everyone to play with along with my 200-500 f5.6. If you are attending, bring along extra SD and XQD cards so you can take your images with you to play with at home. My first impressions are that it is really great! I like the large viewfinder; more like FX size than DX size. I like the weight; more like a D750 than a D800. Not at all a heavy beast but it will weigh more with the battery grip attached. I very much like the high ISO ability. From shooting less than 20 shots I would say if you set the High ISO NR to normal you can shoot jpegs to 51,200 (so you could set auto ISO up to the max native range and just shoot away at indoor sporting events); if you set the HIgh ISO NR to high you can shoot jpegs to 102,400; colors fade too much after High 1.0 (ISO 102,400) but if you switch to monochrome so noise looks like film grain you can shoot jpegs to High 3.0 (ISO 405,600). You can recognize what object you were shooting at High 4.0 (ISO 811,200) but you wouldn't want to use that photo for anything. High 5.0 (ISO 1,622,400) is pretty much unrecognizable and must have only been included for marketing. To me this is quite remarkable for a DX sensor and a new high ISO benchmark.

Now I will have to search for good light and sharp lenses to use with it. So far I have the DX 35mm f1.8, the DX 40mm f2.8 macro. Both of those should be sharp normal lenses on DX. I have the 85mm f1.8 and 70-200 f4 which should be sharp telephoto lenses on DX. Finally, I have the 200-500 f5.6 which is heavy but should be usable for wildlife, especially birding. I was wondering about the Sigma art 18-35 f1.8 as a sharp wide to normal lens. Anyone have any experience with it?

The Sigma 18-35 1.8 is nice on DX. I dont have one but a guy I sometimes shoot with has one and I have had a quick play with it. It has a nice heft and fairly long(physically) for a short lense, and the range is a bit low but not too bad. It has nice bokeh.

Depends on the type of shooter you are I guess, but for me it wasnt a good fit as I don't use the 50mm FOV much ( am I abNORMAL? ). At 18mm it is a nice 28mmFOV so it really is a nice normal to wide range. However, the 16-80 is a very nice range + aperture for a walk about lense or the well regarded Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 is also a nice option. If I get a D500 I would just use my 18-140 that I already have.

However, I would look at the Tokina 14-20 F2 which has excellent coma characteristics which is good for astro and Night cityscapes. otherwise the new Tokina 12-28 f4 looks nice. I have the 12-24 nikkor and its been good. I even use it on my FX (from 18-24)

I've been curious how ISO 1.6M does with video. I keep hearing how the purpose of the High 5s is for surveillance and such. Are things recognizable if you're shooting video as opposed to single shots?

Don't know and won't test it as I don't do video but I would say no one is going to mount a D500 on the side of their house for video surveillance. There are better alternatives. The 1.6 M ISO is marketing hooey and that's fine as long as people realize it. No one will need, or use such a high ISO.

I don't think they meant mount in on your house. More like for police or military work or something like that.

The Siggy 18-35 is a great DX lens Donald. It is pretty pointless being disappointed in the restricted range, because that is part of its great quality and you know the range before you buy it so if that range isn't what you use, don't consider it. Having said that, It is superb for aberrations, (my clicking buddy and I do a lot of night shooting) good colour and really sharp. As much worth buying as any FX Art lens. My buddy's lenses AF did break and they fixed it OK under warranty. I recommend it.

    EDIT: Oops! thanks @heartyfisher.

For those into videography, I took three sample clips and using Media Info (video bitrate specifically and not overall) with movie settings as follows: Image area = DX, Movie quality = High

    I get the following bitrates:

    1080-30p = 20.9 Mbps
    1080-60p = 41.2 Mbps
4K-30p = 125 Mbps (too bad about that add'l 1.5x crop, now I gotta hunt for a super wide angle lens...)

That angry guy is funny, but I stopped watching him because it got boring fast. One day the D3 is the bee's knees, then the D700, then the D7xxx, now the D500? What's next? Not Canon that's for sure...
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Just got my Nikonian Newsletter and there is one complain on battery life. He said, Uh-Oh -- first D500 problem?

Silver member Phil De Amelia (deamelia) has posted a battery drain problem with his brand new Nikon D500:

"Just got a D500 today, and I'm finding a fully charged battery drained after only about 100 shots. 2nd battery is down to 75% after 15 shots. I've got "Airplane mode" on, which is supposed to turn off the Bluetooth and WiFi.

Any other new D500 owners seen this?
(Edited: I'm using original Nikon EN-EL15 batteries)"

Don't get scared-- we have had responses to Phil's post indicating other members have not experienced battery drainage like his. Follow the discussion to see how it goes.
    ============================================
Surely this is not right. It sounds like he has something turned on or some internal electrical issues. 100 shots should not fully discharge a battery.
