Oh no. I just said in another thread that my next camera would be mirrorless, but the D500 is sooo tempting!
I still think the technology is not "there" yet for fast action, so the D500 will have some usable years on it before it hits the rubbish bin. Take a look at this comparison below, which pits the very best and latest mirrorless technology versus the old Canon 7D. To me its still clear that you can't really shoot action with these new cameras yet, but for stills they are probably better versus regular DSLRs now. I am hopeful that Canon will release a serious and silent mirrorless camera this year, as there are a bunch of great EF lenses that I would like to use with such a camera. My hunch is that Nikon will eventually follow, but not for another year or two before releasing a serious mirrorless competitor.
The 7D2 is way better than the old 7D was too. AF is super versatile and the rest of it isn't too shabby at all.
Will there ever be a D510 ? ( LOL the D500 is not even out yet and I am thinking ahead sigh .. :-) )
Moments of Light - D610 D7K S5pro 70-200f4 18-200 150f2.8 12-24 18-70 35-70f2.8 : C&C very welcome! Being a photographer is a lot like being a Christian: Some people look at you funny but do not see the amazing beauty all around them - heartyfisher.
I was thinking more that by the time an update is due, likely that the mirrorless systems will be advanced enough to supersede DSLRs so there may never be a D500 successor.. OR do you think maybe there is one more iteration say in 2 years time?
Hopefully, the D500 will be a huge success for Nikon(Looks like it may be, due to the 4-6 weeks delay so that they can make more!) That success may get the marketing boys to squeeze one more model out. say 8K video? 36MP BSI? popup flash ? :-) more likely built in Wireless flash triggering. Full touch screen menu system. octo-core expeed 7 :-)
Maybe other things like ... dunno... Sensor motion VR, Wireless Integration with VR Glasses, Hybrid optical/digital viewfinder,
Sorry you did ask what else I could possibly want .. :-) LOL. maybe time for a D500 successor thread ? ;-)

First timer here, but there seems to be a solid discussion rolling on the new D500 and as a Nikon sports shooter I'm a little concerned about how were being sold DX.
I began with DX with a d7000. It provided ample resolution once the back focus issue was solved, and it had descent low light performance for indoor stadium motorcycle work which is mostly what I do.
When I could, I invested in the D3s which was my first full frame designed for what I do, again indoor stadium terrible light without a flash photography. However, even matching this with good professional glass I'm handcuffed with 10mp.
My D3 is getting to be long in the tooth and soft in the sensor which has me looking for a new rig. I'll be honest, I don't have the budget for a D5 or I'd be there in a second over the d500. I just don't think they even compare.
I've had the 610, shot the 810, worked with a 750 which all seem to be evolutionary steps but none has speed, which in he tight confines of endurocross you need.
So here is a DX with 10 FPS, but the hurdle for me is the size of the sensor. I'm ok with 20 mb as for quick sports stuff where clients want instant uploads or edits in 24 hours I don't think it matters for the web. What I'd like to understand is the possibilities of a DX sensor image to go to a billboard or a fine art print in the 60 inch realm.
Is there anyone who can help this forum newbie with a professional answer?
I would think the D500 should work for your needs. I've printed 20x30 with 12mp. The D500 also affords faster shutter speeds for low light shooting. Yes, the D5 would probably be a bit better but the D500 shouldn't be a major difference. Autofocus in the D500 should be similar to the D5. I guess we'll see here in the next couple of weeks if they begin shipping. So, back to your concern about resolution for large prints, I think 20mp should be fine. Others here may be able to scientifically answer your question though. I envy your shooting AX. I love shooting MX.
Thanks so much for both well crafted answers. I've had great luck with the D3s over the years. I'm concerned about grain and loosing sharpness while investing two grand. The D3s is dated although still a solid work horse. Do you think an APs-c sensor with 20mp would yield better resolution than a full frame.
I'm sold on the connectivity capability of the d500 for my quick social media work, but I'd hate to loose capability of enlarging images for showroom or commercial work outside of magazine and web.
I love shooting MX, Arenacross, Enduro, and EX and have had great success over the years with the D3s. I've had a d7000 as a backup and light backcountry rig, but when I shoot with the crop factor rig with my standard glass, I've never seen the same results.
This is why I'm so concerned about going from FX to DX.
To print huge you either want to stitch or use the max megapixels you can find. Your argument is really nothing to do with DX versus FX as both the D5 and 500 have the same MP. You can get razor sharp 100% crops from a DX just like you can from FX but would recommend great lenses and smart technique to maximize your chances. Ultimately you have to know what is limiting your images? Is it ISO? Is it frame rate? Is it reach? Is it isolation? Your answer will help steer you where to go.
Yes, you keep talking about resolution - obviously the DX's 20Mp is better resolution than the FX's if you use the same lens that you would on the FX as it is putting more pixels on the motorcycle than the FX. The IQ will come from the glass, so if you really want to be sure, why not hire a D500 and 200-500. From what I have seen when I handled it you should be able to get images with that gear that any client will be happy with.
Regarding your posting .. I am not sure what you are meaning when you say these things about "resolution"
* "Full frame vs. DX resolution" ??
D7000 "crop factor rig" what exactly is your crop factor rig? (what lenses?) and in what way are you not "seeing the same result"?
I am still not certain what your concern is... Re the D500. Are you somehow attributing some aspect of the D7000 onto the D500? you should realize that the D7000 is 3 generations behind the D500 and 1 level down. So the "performance" of the D500 is way way ahead of the D7000..
* "I've had the 610, shot the 810, worked with a 750 which all seem to be evolutionary steps but none has speed, " by "speed" I assume you mean FPS.. but in your sentence it could also mean AF acquisition.. which is it, both?
Your aim seems to be to Upgrade your D3S, In your scenario you seem to me to be concerned about going from FX to DX as in D3s vs D500 .. ie going from 12MP FX to 20MP DX
What lenses do you have ? DX does put more pressure on your lense to be sharp. As a less sharp lense will look sharper on FX vs DX.
For your style and subject choice, To upgrade your D3S you have 4 choices, 1) D4, 2) D4S, 3) D5, 4)D500.
The D4s as suggested previously still a nice camera and would be easier to get to budget wise... many are saying that in real terms the D5 is not much above the D4S
There is a 5th choice and that is to "not upgrade" till you have the funds to get your preferred upgrade. as you say the D3S is no slouch and is still a great Low light Sports shooter. Maybe review your workflow and software?
Another possibility is to wait for the D810 successor or the D750 successor.

To Skian: FX versus DX for motorcycle racing? Depends where you are at the events. Our Black Sky Films U Tube shows the views that are available, Check out Unadilla, Awesome Start! As people who do these events FF is fine if your role in on the sidelines. Even there I would rather have a D500 and the right glass. As to a D500 and the 200-500 I would suggest two camera bodies with two lens. But you should check out some of the Black Sky Films U Tube videos. The views you are thinking of may not depict these events much better than what you are using now. I talk to pros who make their living taking pictures at these events and right now they think the D500 Nikon will be sensational for what you may be doing. But do not rule out some other approaches. Again it depends on where you are in the events. We are track builders, promotors, have been doing this work, some in very large format and medium format, most successful, there with 2 1/4 X 7 and several lens panels.....but the D500 and a 200-500 paired with maybe what you own right now.....would be very good.
I fail though to see a single advantage in FF like a D5 for this.....and many reasons why the D500 or even a D7200 and the 200-500 might be better! I know what racers and parents etc., look for, when they are buying prints, etc., having a fullframe camera does very little to satisfy that niche....any advice to the contrary is formed by the old DX versus FX controversy. Msmoto on this NR website does some of this style work and I know from her posts she sees the D500 as having some real advantages here. Even if you are photographing from the sidelines......gear weight and all adds very little to your mission. DX would be our choice, and FX??? Wouldn't even give it another thought....to expensive, too heavy, gives NO advantages with your target. and there are other far more important views and opportunities. Personally I am rarely impressed with bystander shots. Also check out the racers themselves.....some are wearing helmet cams.....that take in the sights and sounds in a extremely engaging way. Again check out Black Sky Films, Unadilla, Awesome Start.....check out that 4:00 video....Number of FX images....zero....number of Nikon DX.....quite a few.....then Go Pro front and rear racer views, aerial, etc.. Talk to a few pros selling images o shooting for magazine.....where are they going? Good Luck!!!
Actually now the video that would be worth viewing is Unadilla GNCC 2015 about 3 Or 4 down in the Black Sky Fims U Tube videos. No FF work at all....DX plus other gear...
I have seen enough of your race images to know that they are excellent!!! We are holding a race at our farm in the southern tier of NYS this year! Ironically it is being held according to me, that is to help pay the property taxes....
Nikon sure has had some interesting announcements, now to get the gear and put it to use! Post on NR sure do allow me to plan things out better now.... Just wish I could plow as much into photography as I used! However the need for good photos to post on Internet is great! Just wish we were posting more of our actual work, for that is what we really bring to the party!
Sorry: the last post was in response to Msmoto! I can just imagine when I was competing to have her shooting some of my racing! Now I am the grandfather....and my racing days are over.....I do find it amazing what beautiful efficient gear is available today! Everyonce is awhile someone comes across a roll of medium format exposed film here.....like a discovery at a dinosaur dig!
My credit card just got charged by adorama for my D500 order on Jan 5th, about 3 hours after announcement. Whooooooo! I think that means shipping today or tomorrow!

My prediction: The D5/D500 pairing will be a smash hit and in two years Nikon will release a D5s/D500s pairing. Both will have an improved expeed processor which will be able to handle 24mp at the same frame rate. Probably about 1/2 stop improved IQ at all ISOs. That's about it. The mid cycle refresh is a minor refresh.

Dont think they will need a MP boost.. but may get a DR boost especially the flack the D5 is getting for low ISO DR. we still dont know if the lower ISO lower DR attribute is on the D500. D5S will also probably get snapbridge. and I think integrated wireless flash should be a must for both models. wonder what else an "S" version can add ? wireless Mic ?

Maybe a D900/D9000 thread should come before it is time for a D5s/D500s thread. Putting the D810 and D7200 in D5 and D500 bodies for the high MP versions.
