I have also seen some dumb people due dumb things with expensive DSLR & lens. You want to ask what were you thinking but let it pass. People treat their gear in all different ways. Guess that is how lens manufacturers continue to sell lots of lens.

This should have been covered by the warranty.

I would right a letter to Nikon with copies of the receipt and warranty info. Be nice and explain your disappointment that this was not covered under the warranty. This is not normal and should be covered by the warranty.
2 emails from Nikon Canada and they are giving me rather sad responses throwing in to question that it was oil and that they charge for basic maintenance. I get the feeling they really could care less that I was charged to remove an oil spot on a 3 month old D7100.

That is very sad. That kind of customer service over the long run is going to hurt them badly.

Well, theoretically it could have been oil from outside of the camera and in some way recognised as non-shutter-related? After all, I still find it a poor service because thus is the easiest way to keep customers happy. Even if it's not from the shutter, they could have made a benefit by giving photophun a reason to talk positive of their service.

I see one of the big mail order camera dealers, Abe of Main, has dropped the price on the D7100. It's less than $1,094. If you have been thinking of buying, now is the time.

Yes, as the only contribution Nikon has to make. So much to the "innovation factor". Compared to Canon (3 awards) or Sony, Panasonic, Tamron, Samsung (each 2), the 7100 looks a bit lonely in that list.

Getting the European Camera award is a great accomplishment for Nikon. Did you happen to see the Canon 1Dx there? Have a look at EISA award list for 2012-2013 where both the D800 & D4 took top awards as well.

Did you happen to see our beloved Sigma 35 1.4 or the USB doc on the awards list? What does that say about your definition of "innovation" given the bold stance you have taken in labeling them as such?

Yeah, great. Shame they didn't have an award for poor communication, poor ability to fix problems and one for being late to market (D400) then Nikon would have swept the board... :-w

update on my camera ,as some of you may have read i was having all sorts of problems with it .re metering ,exposure compensation ,performance with t.c's .it was a intermittent problem i.e shoot off twenty shots of the same subject and ten of those would be wild exposure values ,i had a lot of suggestions from various people (thanks) that kept me slightly sane but yesterday it decided to go completely tits up and although set at 400iso i found upon review that it took the pics at 4000 iso and one second shooting at f7.1 it then changed itself to f45 yes forty five .
then the review screen and menu screen went blank .after a quick phone call i took it back to the retailer L.C.E in chester and they swopped it for a brand new body .tried a few test shots this morning and so far touch wood its behaving like a nikon should

took over 700 shots with it today at a airshow ,it behaved like a nikon should ,re-gained a lot of lost confidence today .give it another good bash tomorrow with wildlife ,,but i feel good with this one ,

the only thing that bothers me is from comments i have had trying to help on here and elsewhere i think there are a lot of these dodgy bodies out there but people think its the norm due to the new sensor etc ,its not i have used my 300 f4 with it today with the 1.4 tc and the 1.7 tc not a problem with any .so if your having any exposure problems either get back to your retailer or nikon asap

One of the things I like about my D7100 over the D7000 is the mode setting locks into place.
I'm going to be using my D7100 tomorrow night for some low light, super wide angle (10-24) shots at a concert. I'll let you all know how it does.

and just had a text from a good friend ,he bought his d7100 a week after me ,had the same sort of problems re-metering and his retailer swopped his with no quibble either hmmmmmm

Interesting that you should note that, that was the reason why I got the D7000, the non-locking mode dial.

The problem I have with the non locking mode dial is accidentally bumping it and it changes modes. I can't check my settings when I'm busy getting off shots a lot of times so it's important to me to have it lock in place.

I tried the D7100 with the 10-24 DX last night shooting a concert and it just didn't work. Wouldn't focus and the noise was horrible at ISO6400. That said, it's not suppose to be good doing that but it's an incredible camera and I'm glad I own it.

@Bland: I don't know if all crop sensors are the same, but my experience of the D7000 is that it only performs well at hi ISO when there is a lot of light around. Kind of counter intuitive really. :-<

You have a FX don't you? how would that have done at the same light levels/ISO?

You're correct spraynpray. I was test shooting my D7100 under those conditions, not really expecting much. I used my D800 to shoot the concert, just did a couple of shots with the D7100 to see what it would do.

@Bland: So in detail how did the D800 do in comparison to the D7100?

This is useful information as I have an ache that will only be cured by a D800 :-*

@spraynpray .. I'll go in detail at a later date and I'll show some examples then as well. Sorry I can't do it now but I'm back in town for a very short time.

Basically, shooting outdoors in the sunlight I've been using the D7100 because there's little difference between it and the D800.

With flash I'm using the D800 because there is a noticeable difference with the AF on low light and somewhat with the quality of the still.

Shooting low light without the flash, concerts and etc., there's no comparison at all as the D800 is far superior over the D7100 but as I wrote previously that is to be expected. Lots of noise with the D7100 at ISO 6400 and it had a horrible time trying to auto focus but I was also using the DX 10-24 lens and that probably was a huge factor in the AF issue but even with a good lens it can't auto focus as well as the D800.

@Bland: Thanks - that's good feedback. Sounds like the D7100 is not much of an upgrade (if at all) on the D7000 in those areas then.

I do a lot of low light - I wonder what the best landscape lens is on the D800 for low light focus? 24-70 I suppose.

A friend of mine belongs to a band and has a D7000 and has shown me some great images he has taken at some of the indoor concerts halls they have played in. Moreover, the indoor setting are low light. I have a feeling the D7100 would do as well. Yet, I would agree that the D800 is superior in low setting than the D7000/7100.

@spraynpray: Telephotos's are not the ideal lens for concert photography...the 24-70 2.8 would be nice choose, however, for those type of setting, if I was shooting them, I would stick with primes. The 24 1.4G would be my go to lens...great choice for wide-angle, sucks in light like a black-whole, and amazingly sharp. Followed by a 35 1.4 for the group shots and extra reach; lastly the 85 1.8G for the nice isolated shot of the band and extra reach.

@Golf007sd: Say what bud? I don't understand your response - did you get my name wrong or mis-read my post? I am thinking 24-70 for landscape nothing to do with concerts and nothing to do with telephotos.

I use the 16 -35 f 4 and the 24-120 f4, often at twilight, I don't like using a tripod so like to have VR

the are lots of discussions on 24 -70 f 2.8 vs 24 -120 f 4 VR, The general conclusion , they both great lens
