when i select same as multi selector & pick info left/right & playback up/down & hit ok ..... still have left/right to change photos when holding the camera in normal position and use the multi selector

Hi My friend has just got his D4 back today, he had focus issues with back focusing according to nikon. On its return he noticed that Nikon had updated his Firmware even though it has had the latest up date done in december 27 2012. Now his firmware now says A1.O3 B1.02 AND L 1.006 and he also had an S but now its gone ? Now mine was the same as his except that my L 1.004 from last update dec 27 , so dose Nikon have another update and have not released it yet or its a only a nikon fix done in Nikon . I'm in London uk.
Any body else have had update from nikon and there L has moved from L1.004 to L.1006.

    Thanks

My D800 came with L1.006, is this not Distortion control data update. It's been on the Nikon site (USA) for some time or do i have it wrong.

    @adam

That's a tough, tough call. One I've been struggling with since the day the D4 was announced. For me, it's different. I eventually want two matched FX bodies. And, two D3s bodies (one refurbed, and one used) are going to be substantially cheaper than twin D4s (but, as you mention, now that D4 refurbs are appearing, the decision gets even harder).

However, since I'm often shooting ultra-low light stuff with my D3s, between its slightly superior DxO noise score, and my friends' complaints about their D4s' noise levels (real or imagined), I've decided to keep my D3s, and buy another, used, D3s for use as a second FX body for event shooting.

Look at it this this way, Adam. If you only need a single, low-light FX body, then you may consider selling your D3s now, and upgrade to a D4. If you need matching FX bodies for event shooting, you could have two used D3s bodies for the price of a single D4 body.

A good video that show the D4 vs the 1Dx night shot video capabilities. Both are fantastic, however, I think the D4 was sharper. What say you?

For those shooting the D4: look at this youtube video by Peter Gregg (last I know he was using a D3x).

Do you think the Cannon 1Dx is better than the D4 in some of those 8 points he discusses? If so, which of the 8 do you think the D4 cannot do as well as the 1Dx? I could see the joystick and the spot metering moving with the focus point offering a practical advantage saving time when shooting in varied lighting with a single focus point. I would like to be able to change focus points quickly and have the spot metering follow that focus point.

Spot metering on Nikon bodies moves with the focus point as well, unless you are using non-CPU lenses. I cannot see anything that he points out that Nikon bodies cannot do.

If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Agree! My D4 seems to work fairly well... a heck of a lot better camera than I am photographer.

Do you think that joystick is any faster than Nikon's multi-selector and sub-selector control of the single sensor? Or are they just different names or the same thing? Anyone try both systems back to back to see if one works faster or smoother than the other?

@donaldejose Everything that Mr. Gregg said about the 1Dx is available and functions on par if not better on the D4. The dynamic range of the D4 is just Fantastic and I have never had any issue with how it meters. I can easy recover details that one would think unobtainable. AF is second to none...it rocks. The only feature that the 1Dx has over the D4 is the frame rate. But I gladly give that up for the uncompressed HD video out, the build in browser which allows easy tethering and the XQD card to boot.

For most of us to change to Canon would be a 30 large experience.....no interest, thanks.

How about the other way: pros changing from Canon to Nikon? I suppose if the 1Dx and the D4 are about equal the investment in lenses keeps anyone from changing systems.

Morning, Nikon has another update today 29/1/13 D4 update for AF-C Subject tracking performance in AF-C (continuous-servo autofocus) autofocus mode with framing using the viewfinder has been improved. D4 A to ver 1.04 and B firmware to ver.1.02. B stays same only A has gone up from A1.03 to A1.04 no change to B .
It just shows that Nikon had rushed the D4 out .

"It just shows that Nikon had rushed the D4 out"

Canon must be thankful for that - imagine what it could have been if they had taken their time!!!! :))

    I don't think so...

@Golf007sd FROM L 1.004 TO L 1.006 is a Distortion control data update are used to correct barrel and pincushion distortion during shooting and editing. They can be loaded into cameras that support distortion control.

@studio460 Good Call mate i should have kept my D3s This D4 I'm not impressed with, and yes the D3s is better in low light then D4 .
  • tog4tog4 Posts: 8Member
Some of these D4s are real lemons its a shame Nikon rushed them out it could of been a great camera like the D3 AND D3s .
  • Golf007sdGolf007sd Posts: 2,840Moderator
@tog4 The D4 is technological more advanced than the D3 & D3s camera. Moreover, the low light performance of the D4 is better, than the D3's bodies by a small margin. As for updates, that is why manufactures have updates to improve performance or address issues that need fixing. I disagree with your "lemon," "rushed out" remarks. The D4 is an Awesome camera.

I have one of the very first D4's in the USA. A fact supported by some of the disgruntled..LOL. Other than the usual oil spots, which it has not had one for the past 8,000 clicks, I have found the camera to be a very strong performer. And, in any highly complicated camera, utilized under extreme conditions, there will be discovered changes to improve certain aspects of its behavior.

I have not heard of anyone use the term "lemon" to describe their D4. Almost every screw up with my D4 is due to an error on the part of the operator....me.
