D800, 80-400G VRII, TC-17e @ 650mm. Had to reduce the noise but rather happy with the performance considering the TC was involved. 1/800 sec; f/14; ISO 3200, 650.0 mm (in 35mm: 650.0 mm), 71% crop.

Symphotic is there enough in that bonus check for both of us. I have over half saved.

My colleague informs me that at Kitamura camera in Osaka these are discounted to JYE238,000. That's about $2,400, with consumption tax included. At this price, they are rarely in stock. Yodobashi shows them for JYE264,000, including tax. He also confirms that the lens is "Made in Japan".

The best I've been able to find is Amazon offering a 4% reward.

    Still thinking.

    Pow!

I pulled the trigger and Amazon delivered next day.

I took some shots in my backyard. No great subject matter, but I wanted to see if it focused well and what the photos looked like. So far, I am impressed. I'll take it to sea tomorrow: maybe I can get some whale or dolphin shots.

Symphotic congrats. I still need $700 more. Maybe I should count my change jar but I think it's only about $200 or $300. :((

Well today I was at the camera shop and was told that Nikon lens rebates will start on Sunday February 9th. AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm is $400 off. Bummer they are closed on Sunday. I will have mine on Monday. Maybe I'll go in on Saturday and look so sad that they will let me have it. Now to stand in front of the mirror and practice the sad look and maybe make a tear to. Don't see it on the Nikon web site though. Hope they are not messing with me.

I should've guessed this would happen! (I bought mine in late December.)

(Instead I predicted that my purchase of this lens would prompt Nikon to come out with a D400 that I can't afford right now. :) )

@Nikonhotep, depending on where and how you purchased the lens you may still be able to get the discount. Many credit cards have price protection, as do some retailers. Worth checking anyway...

Hm... I had not thought of that, Ironheart. I purchased mine at B&H. I will investigate and also check with my credit card. Thanks for mentioning it!
