Thanks all. Good advice. I will try to approach the next body with a clearer head!

Lenses: I have the 18-105VR, 35/1.8G and the 50/1.4G. So I have modest coverage and low light ability already for DX shooting without spending anything more on lenses. I'm moderately invested in DX. Becoming more obsessed with quality of background defocus though.

Regarding clear and crisp images.... I took a long break from photography. I was an avid photographer back when film was the median of choice and within the past year became involved in digital photography. I really love the median and I am impressed with the equipment we have availiable to us. I do believe (and do not know the technical reasons why - others are much better equiped to answer this aspect than I here in these forums) that digital requires the use of mono or tripods to get the best images. No doubt this is true for film but for me it stands out that if you desire crisp images these two items (mono and tripods) are the rule rather than the exception. It makes a big difference....

KnockKnock, that must have been very frustrating to have gotten a body that was not up to snuff......

The rules of photography haven't changed just because we switched to digital, so I'm not sure I get your point @rschnailble.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I'm about to go for the D7000 bundle deal on B&H. Current price is good till Feb. 2. Any word if the price will stay the same, like it did on Jan 13th, or drop or increase? :-SS

I just got it myself- best deal out there. They charge tax, but the stuff they give you easily makes up for it.

For those people who already own DX glass and own cameras that are one or two generations behind the D7000, there's no reason to get a D300s unless you need that build, frame rate and buffer. It's smaller than I expected and much more camera than I'd ever need.

Not exactly sure what you mean either- do you mean that for high megapixel stuff like the D800 you need to be careful with shaking the camera than we were with low megapixel cameras?

There's a detail I've never noticed or read about! Looks like the D300, D600, D800 have the black-out button.

I actually like the blacked out button- it's a smoother actuation. At least on the D40, there's a more sudden and abrupt change from wanting just AF and metering to shutter release. On the D7000, it's much more smooth- perhaps too smooth because I've taken shots without noticing that I've depressed the shutter all the way down. Operations wise I feel like overall the shutter is much more responsive.

I think Knock Knocks sad and true case should always give us pause. If you get a bad individual camera you are faced with a very tragic uphill battle. We know from using many types of high tech gear that a bad copy can be anything from expensive to dangerous. All I can say is that the seller and the manufacturer should make good on this. Some users by the way would never realize they had a major problem on their hands and just keep getting very bad results. All said, i think the D7000 is still the best DSLR buy out there. Yet if you get a bad one, you need to find out that immediately and get it corrected. Good luck to you KnockKnock on this. I will say I parted company with your seller over such an issue a long time ago.

Yes, that is a bummer for knock-knock, but as I said somewhere else - when you buy a refurb you are pinning your hopes on a body that very likely has had some history plus being handled and used for a good while by a.n.other.
    Always learning.

The D7000, Nikkor 18-200VRII Kit finally came in. \:D/ (New York snow slowed the mail down by 10 days!) So far its a very nice upgrade from my old D5000 and Tamron 18-250mm. Noticeably more solid & heavier than the D5000. Only complaint is the Tamron had better ergonomics but I'll get used the new Nikkor. Great to have a rear display that I can see if the shot is in focus or not. Latest firmware A:1.02, B:1.03, L:1.006. -I would expect for a new model.

Worth noting is that Amazon doesn't have any D7000 (body only) in stock. Estimated ship date is 1-2 MONTHS.

    http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-16-2MP-DX-Format-Digital-3-0-Inch/dp/B0042X9LC4/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1360968182&sr=1-1&keywords=d7000

Sure, you can buy it from other vendors THROUGH Amazon, but you can't actually buy it from them. Could that mean that when they announce the D7x00 it'll ship reallly really soon? Or is it just an inventory hiccup?

I thought I was the only one missing the chrome button on recent models. I have it in my D90 and I like it.

Its like chrome detais in a car. It adds nothing, but it is good for the eyes. Hahaha...

Now the 7100 has been announced I really don;t know whether to sell my 7000 and replace it with the 7100. I got the 7000 at xmas. What do you guys think?

or is it one of those things that i'll just have to say "oh well" to and get on with life.

    Hi rctneil,

I don't think there is a great deal to upgrade. I'm not upgrading. I do video and the lack of AA filter could be a deficit.

    My best,

    Mike
