@tcole1983: Your D5000 has taken some better shots than I've seen taken by some people on this forum using the more expensive cameras and whatever anybody says, it still takes as good shots as it did when you bought it. I'm not saying you will not enjoy upgrading to a D7100, but I am saying that finding yourself in a state of confusion with a new camera is not where you want to be in a wedding scenario.

    Just my 2c.

I know spray...just camera envy. Actually I want a backup body for the wedding. A D5300 rental might be a better choice...probably about the same performance, but would have similar controls I am used to. Hopefully I can just buy something, but we will see. Coming up quick.

I just saw this by Thom:

    "Lenses that are still VR I include: 18-55mm, 18-105mm, 24-120mm, 55-200mm, 80-400mm, and the 200mm f/2. Lenses that are known to be “VR II” include 16-35mm f/4, 16-85mm DX, 18-200mm II, 70-200mm II, 70-200mm f/4, 200-400mm II, 300mm II, 400mm II, 500mm II, and 600mm II."

Frankly I am amazed to read this. My 16-85's VR was like the VR was on my 18-105. No difference at all that I could detect. When I tried the 24-120 the VR seemed noticeably better than either of those lenses, and my 70-200 f4's VR2 is on a different planet by comparison so it makes me think that there is more to it than the name VR1 or VR2.

    Anybody have any explanation?

@spraynpray: the current NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II dose have the VR II system. Mr. Hogan needs to update/correct his listing.

Any idea what the 105mm macro Nikkor VR version is? It seems relatively early VR lens. Maybe I haven't shot with it all that much, but I don't think it is all that great.

I am almost certain that the 70-200 F4 is one of the few with VR3 so that list seems a bit off..

That makes sense from what I've experienced hearty. Also, the 16-85/24-120 thing makes me think that list is pretty random. Not what I'd expect from Thom.

Thanks- does Nikon do silent updates to lenses? Can earlier lenses be somewhat different in specifications than later lenses? Say, they found a cheaper way to produce the lens or rework the VR system slightly. I can see them implementing that without announcing a completely new lens. I ask because the 105 macro was originally produced in Japan and shifted to China.

IMO more than a few people on this forum could profit from a 12-step program for gearaholics (this from someone who currently owns 8 different cameras).

UPDATE: Challenge question for everyone. Without looking, can you tell me how much it would cost to buy 1 copy of every DSLR lens Nikon makes, based on the retail price that's listed on the Nikon USA Web site? I have the answer. Just curious if people have a feeling for what it would cost to go Full Gearaholic.

As in currently in production or legacy lenses too? I would ballpark it at about $150k if you limit it to just current lenses.

There are a handful of lenses that are at least $5000, plus the tilt shifts are not cheap.

    Don't forget the $18k for the AF-S 800mm F5.6E. ;)
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Ah, further into the article on VR is the following which does make sense WRT my experience:

"Nikon has now published the results of the standard CIPA test for all current Nikon VR lenses. This standardized test tries to give you a sense of how well the stabilization systems work in identical circumstances. Here are the current numbers:"

VR 2 stops better than no VR: 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D (old)
    VR 2.5 stops better than no VR: 16-35mm f/4G, 70-300mm f4.5-5.6G, 600mm f/4G
    VR 3 stops better than no VR: 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX, 55-200mm f/4-5.6G DX, 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G DX, 85mm f/3.5G Micro-Nikkor DX, 105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor, 200mm f/2G II, 200-400mm f/4G, 300mm f/2.8G II, 400mm f/2.8G, 500mm f/4G
    VR 3.5 stops better than no VR: 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G DX, 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G DX, 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G DX, 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G DX, 24-120mm f/4G, 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G, 70-200mm f/2.8G II
    VR 4 stops better than no VR: 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G, 70-200mm f/4G, 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G (new), 800mm f/5.6E with 1.25x converter

Well not exactly what i had hoped to get but I pulled the trigger on a D5200 with 18-55 lens. Didn't need the lens but it was a better deal then I could find the body only. Figure I can use the lens on the d5000 and it would make a light weight kit if my wife wants to use it.

Performance seems on par with the d7100 and don't care too much about the d5300 updates. Two generations newer. Should have similar controls to the D5000 and will save me from renting something for the wedding.

Camera came today! Like it so far. The autofocus seems much better so far. The menus and screen are pretty different but seems good. There were a couple options I stumbled upon already that I like. ISO 100 will be nice...the 36 MB raw files are a bit insane...glad I got a couple 32 gb cards a while back. Still kind of wish I had gotten the d7100...but maybe that will have to wait until I get more paying gigs. This should get me through this wedding.

Thanks, Ali. I wear a hat almost all the time…. the critical issue is that Malignant Melanoma which kills about 10,000 Americans per year is caused by UV from the sun or tanning beds. All preventable if an appropriate skin block is used.

The message from the video is so clear, but alas, most of us will simply deny it can happen to us.

+1 to the above comments on the video. I always though it never could happen to me until 8 years ago when they found the first Malignant Melanoma. Over the past 6 years they have removed 3 of these. When I walk for exercise, mow the lawn, out taking pictures you will always find me with a hat on. Of course, the Nikonnian one when shooting pictures.

I even use a lotion when I am going to be out for extended period of time. More people need to watch the video and take better care of their skin...including balding heads. That was not directed at any one specific person.

    400/2.8 lens hood - £560 !!!!!

Does Nikon offer pre-ordering? Where does everyone do their pre-ordering from? Is there a pre-order discussion somewhere I can look at?
