I figured I'd start a thread just discussing anything about airplanes or anything that flies. It could be about old war stories like a couple members were discussing the P-51 Mustang in the photo-a-day thread, to air shows, and aerial photography.

Of course, that includes non-fixed wing craft like helicopters too.

http://www.npr.org/2017/04/22/525106154/at-75-a-world-war-ii-legend-gets-a-full-makeover

I wanted to make this thread because I saw this article about the restoration of an old war bird.

This photo I took was a long time ago, but unfortunately I have not had more time to actively seek out more old warbirds.

I haven't shot an airshow before, but I imagine it would be a lot of fun.

I'd like to go to the Oshkosh Air Show at some point.

That would be a dream but I can't afford the expense or time away right now. It is close enough to me I could drive there in a few hours.

You can find 4 of the shots I took here. The airport managers wife talked me into entering the contest.
    http://www.iowadot.gov/aviation/photocontest/2016/index.html
They are first in air shows, first in helicopter, third in war planes and first in skydiving, there is only one in that category so guess that was an easy one. Other years there have been more.

Imagine the images you could have gotten if you could go back in time to the Hindenburg with a D5, a Zeiss 15mm, and a position directly under the dirigible... Oh, hell, never mind. I'm drunk again. Now, for the real question: do any of you airshow enthusiasts have a particular spot or position you like to be in to shoot from?

As the schedule currently stands, the Blue Angels are set to be at Oshkosh 2017 on July 29-30.

Canada's Snowbirds put on a rockin' set of shows last year.

NsxTypeR - Great idea. I live less than 2 hours from Oshkosh and yet never been there for the EAA airshow. But I have been told to avoid the weekend and go during the week.

These shots are from shows in Madison, Wi a few years ago. I like bombers and fighters.

Background piece. My Dad was career USA Air Force and retired with 35 years. He was shot down twice in WWII in B17's and few a lot of different birds but liked the B29. He was a Lead Radar Navigator in EU. He also flew in the Pacific including over Japan. I don't remember now, but he flew in about every bomber from the 1940s to the B52H.

He is one of the few AF Officers that flew in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. I was in college when he took a 9 month assignment to train crews to fly over Vietnam and later was reassigned to Thailand for a 18 month assignment.

So I am very partial to bombers.

I was a photographer for the Army engineer corps in Vietnam. I traveled most of the country taking construction progress photos. Hitched a ride on a C130 once and all but one or two of the crew were from the Royal Thailand Air force. Wonder if he had anything to do with them.

Retread - No he was not involved with the Royal Thailand AF. Thanks for asking. His assignment was Weapons Training of the B52 air crews and ground maintenance crews.

Only just noticed this thread and although not particularly into aerial photography I'm happy to try and grab a shot whenever the opportunity arises, as was the case with this one. A Hercules C130 transport plane I believe which just happened to fly over our golf course during our Lady Captain's Golf Day last year.

I've got a shot of a Vickers Vulcan bomber somewhere which I'll try and dig out - last surviving example which is sadly no longer flying due to the costs of keeping it airworthy.

If museum pieces are welcome, my son and I made a trip to Northern VA last summer and spent a day at the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum near Dulles. Let me know when you get tired of them and I'll quit.

First up is a Vietnam era remotely piloted ASW helicopter. The weapon slung beneath it is a mock up of a nuclear tipped depth charge.
