PC. I tried everything that logic said should fix it - this as of yesterday morning:

When I clicked on export in LR4.4, the transparent bar at the top of the LR screen went slightly opaque and the program hung. Any click caused an error noise. ESC got the program working normally again, but if I tried to export any image it hung again. I have tried making a new catalogue, importing a new image into it and trying to export from that, same problem. I tried repairing LR using my disc, same problem. I tried uninstalling LR and re-installing it, same problem. I tried uninstalling PSCC, same problem. I tried restoring my PC to an earlier point (before PSCC), same problem. I have asked a question on the Adobe forums, no reply yet.

Yesterday afternoon I upgraded to LR5 and it works - illogically. It's like Adobe got in there and said 'aha we'll turn export off so he can't export until he upgrades' I know that is silly, but I have a DVD and re-installing it from that and downloading the upgrades should have been the same as downloading LR5 but it wasn't! If you think about it, that is what Adobe could do - give everybody a fully functional version that they can't use the images from by exporting until they pay for the key.

Anyway, fixed now. Thanks for your interest NSX.

I should have got a Mac!

    @spraynpray

I had a similar problem with LR4.4. It burped and then would give me an error message when I tried to export anything. I then opened a backup, and continued from there with no problems.

Since, I have now gone to LR 5.3. I will go back and try to upgrade the old version which burped, but I have been told by LR experts a disc error occurred which is apparently not something which can be repaired.

I will update this post once the old LR 4.4 update is complete.

@Msmoto: Yeah, @sevencrossing said he had a disc problem that caused it too. OK, I'm happy with the explanation that it is a disc error, but I really don't understand why de-installing it and re-installing it didn't fix the problem.

Oh well, the upgrade to LR5 fixed it and I'm liking the new clone tool!

A strange request, but I get bothered when I don't know what something is.

I was in Taiwan last year and the tour guide pointed out this structure was historically significant and if I remember right it was a guest house of sorts for Madame Chiang Kai Shek. Well I decided to look it up and there was no info, and that sort of bothers me.

I did take a photo of it from the bus. This is definitely near the city of Taipei, and I would guess the street signs would be helpful in a Google search.

    DSC_0544

On a side note, if the mods deem it right, it would be interesting to have a separate thread where we post up interesting things for other members to research. Just a thought, though I didn't know if it was appropriate.

A sort of "Unknown" picture thread where the topic would be decided by the subject matter. Could be historical, architectural, technology, etc.

On a bit of a side note, it would be somewhat useful if I had GPS at that point...

    Thanks in advance!

My GPS never comes off. I learned that lesson when I spent a couple of weeks at my in-laws place in China and could not find it on a map.

I never had the GPS module so I don't think it would have helped me haha.

Actually, the street signs were incredibly helpful!

I Googled the pedestrian path and found a Wiki page for the road and then found a list of attractions along it.

@ heartyfisher, This is done in camera. I've watched wedding photographer Susan Stripling do this on two "Creative Live" siminars. You must first take a silhouette photo of the person or people (she usually shoots the couple about to kiss but lips still not touching and with the sun behind them to create the silhouette of them). Then you shoot something else like the leaves of a tree or bush that's brushed by light. In this case the shimmering water is used.

In-camera you'd go to the edit menu and use the exposure on exposure item (I'm at work so I can't exactly recall what it's called). There's a specific way to sequence the files but one has to definitely go first every time - either the silhouette or the texture image. You'd then use the menu adjustments to decrease the density of the silhouette file to allow the background to bleed thru. There you have the image in camera.

    It's like in-camera Photoshop layers.

Is it ok for me to plug a friend's crowd funding campaign for a book on lightroom and managing the hundreds/thousands of photos we take?

in her spare time she organizes photo meet ups for us in melbourne i have been to a dozen or so in the last year.. Helped me meet the nice bunch of photographers who organized that mermaid shoot above :-)

Has anybody given any though to the possible imminent collapse of the Chinese economy? With crazy debts of a size larger than the American economy, it looks like a house of cards. What would this mean for Photographers?

Every day. I have a family there. What kind of collapse are you talking about? A major recession with the communist party holding on to power is one scenario. Despite lens being made in China, I would not worry much.

Now if we are talking the kind of collapse accompanied by political collapse or a foreign war with Japan (which they would lose and would likely result in political collapse), even that would not mean much to photographers, unless you are a photojournalist. Of course, if the foreign war involved nukes and Japanese camera manufacturers were converted to radioactive dust, then that would impact photographers. However, if that happened, the state of photography would be the least of our concerns.

I would not worry about it.

Can I bump this for my friend.. 4 more days of her campaign to go..

"When you switch to digital photography you have to learn about megabytes, backing up and making things like photo books. If you don’t, then it’s likely that you’ll never see your favourites again. So I decided to write a book that helps amateur photographers get on top of their photo management.

The book is called ‘Memories at your fingertips - organise your digital photos like a pro’ and it:

    1. Explains how to set up and maintain one single photo database
    2. Provides an introduction to simple tools for enhancing images
    3. It shows you how to make things like slideshows, books, prints and blogging."

@ PitchBlack, I'm in West Palm Beach - in fact, Wellington. I was wondering if you'd be coming this way to shoot during Polo season. I personally have never gone to a match but your photos, more than anything else, have boosted my interest. Let me know when you'd be coming and I'll see if I'm free to hang out for a bit.
