I like using the highlight exposure feature of the D810. It is better than measuring the hightlight area and locking in the exposure. I set one of the fn buttons to activate it so that i can have two exposures one in matrix and one in highlight weighted. You have to be careful and practice using it for the best scenerios.
I do street scenes and landscapes. A single white car in the scene will throw off exposure or if I meter the hightlights then focus & recompose and if the sky changes (clouds/sun) then it throws off my exposure. Then the most famous noob mistake is that I forget to remove the ae lock and my next shots are under or over exposed.
I really like the feature though othwerwise good practice and attention to detail is your best bet.
So when shooting a stage production or other very high contrast scene you cannot just prevent highlight burnout by setting exposure compensation to -0.7 or -1? What does the new system do? Measure the highlight area and adjust overall exposure to keep that spot from burning out? I would think you could do about the same thing if you had some time by looking on your LCD in the blink mode and making sure you adjust exposure compensation down enough to stop any blinking yellow spots. Or does the new system do something different?
So it automatically does the same thing a person would do themselves but would take many steps to accomplish. In shooting a stage production where the lighting is constantly changing that can be very helpful.
I've decided to get an 810 against my better judgment. A big client finally paid me a big check and I've decided that I want it for more than anything else the exposure system. Now I just need to sell one of my D800 cameras.
I trust your opinion and judgement greatly, I too very much look forward to hearing what you have to say about this new camera. Congratulations on the purchase.
I think you are right PitchBlack. In one step you've eliminated highlight blowout. Yes, it does drop the exposure throughout the image. I need to play with this some more.
I asked Nikon but they didn't reply with an answer. I asked what you asked, is it the same as -1 or spot metering and no reply. They Did answer my other question though.
I been playing with it and it comes handy for my looking up shots.
This shot below I had highlighted weighted but it doesn't work with the person unless I edit him or apply flash if I wanted to then it is ok to use.
For this shot below I used matrix and fn button for highlight weighted. I probably choosed to edit the highlight one. Here it works for me because the scene changes and spot metering and locking the exposure might not have been ideal. Plus I kept re-composing for about a minute until I was satisfied of the framing
And that's why I like it. Less fiddling when my scene changes in seconds. I did have a practice to turn off the camera when ever I locked the exposure otherwise I would forget to reset it. The Highlight weighted method resolves that issue. It's a win and great feature
I am very upset with Nikon. I am a pro and switched from canon with this deal in mind. I ordered a d810 and 9000$ worth of lenses from adorama but I can't collect the $1000 dollar rebate. I would have had to fly to New York! total Scam! fine print says "Retail sales made to a retail customer not physically present at the dealer location, e.g., telephone, mail-order or internet sales, and shipped by the dealer to the retail customer via common carrier to an address outside the 50 United States, the District of Columbia or Puerto Rico are excluded from this offer. D810 Filmmaker’s Kit & Animator’s Kits are excluded from this offer." NO INTERNET SALES. I switched from Canon to Nikon with this deal in mind, now I'm wondering if I should even bother sending all the info in. What do you think?
Jlister: Call Adorama and see if you can send it all back for a full refund. Have someone in New York, maybe a Nikon Rumors member go buy the stuff in person and mail it to you. Split the $1,000 refund with them. Just an idea.

The Switch & Save Voucher itself does not contain any of that wording and simply restricts the use of the voucher to the retailer where the voucher qualifying purchases were made. I suggest calling Adorama and ask them how they will apply your voucher.
So just got my D810 today. I was lucky enough to get one of the refurbished D810's from Robert's. It arrived with a 124 shutter count and still has the new camera smell. Mmmm Lovely. It didn't have a USA sticker in the battery compartment so I called Nikon to verify it was a USA body (it was) and that it had the thermal service advisory fix performed (it had the black dot, but wanted to be sure.) This is my second refurbished camera from Robert's, the D800 being the first and had a 17 shutter count. I don't think I'd hesitate to order from them again.
First impressions. So far I like everything about it better than the D800. Things that really stick out are the ergonomics, the more comfortable grip, the larger thumb nub to rest your thumb on while gripping the camera. The bottom corner near the auto focus selection button is more curved and the button is rough so it's easier to find and adjust. The shutter is super quiet, wasn't expecting such a big difference, but it definitely is. The highlight metering mentioned above seems to work well for contrasty subjects and I like the new metering selection placement. The autofocus also feels snappier and seems to lock right on. I also noticed that my raw images start off quite a bit sharper in Lightroom with a default value of 25 than previously with the D800. In general it feels like a more refined D800 which is pretty much in line with all the reviews I read before purchasing the new D810.
There is one thing that's bugging me a little bit though and that's the new OLED display. I wear glasses and sometimes I use the camera without them and switch back and forth without adjusting the diopter and I noticed that the text seems significantly blurrier when I use the viewfinder without my glasses, but when the diopter is corrected (or actually uncorrected) for my glasses. I looked at the older display in my D800 and it gets a little bit fuzzier, but not nearly as blurry. Has anyone else noticed this issue? I don't think it's going to be a deal breaker, but honestly I think I prefer the old display since it stayed in focus better if the diopter settings was slightly off even if it was a little darker and less crisp to start with.
+1 nek4life - thanks for sharing, I found the D810 information very useful. I have purchased two DSLR bodies from Roberts and one lens and one battery grip. All new and got excellent service. I went with them on the D90+kit lens for my wife when we needed it in 3 days and they beat B&H and Adorama's delivery estimates. I am impressed with the shutter activations on a refurbished camera. Great way to save $$$$$$.
Looking forward to seeing some of your photos in PAD.

Well, I got my D810 and it solves one of my greatest complaints about the D800; that is, that it conflates background and flash compensation instead of, like Canon, allowing you to adjust these separately. As a professional who works a lot with flash outdoors, this really solves a lot of headaches and eliminates a lot of guesswork. ISO 64 helps here as well.
Is this just out of the box or is there a custom setting for this? Any more interesting things you've discovered about the D810?
I saw a D810 in the wild today. I was busy aligning target sights at a shooting range and a couple of guys came onto the range with a Beretta 92FS and a D810 complete with 85 mm f/1.4 lens. Shooting in two different ways. The camera man is a student at New York Film Academy and told me the school gave him the camera as part of the program. The Beretta shooter is former military, keeping his skills up. Too bad they weren't there two weeks ago when I was using my D810 with the 80-400 mm lens to video rifle practice for a couple of Army Reservists.

Got united with my new D810 yesterday, and couldn't be happier. This will be an excellent first camera to my D800 as backup. Initial observations; it is faster, in AF and in FPS. It is "cleaner", sharper in dark scenes, and boy it is quiet:)
I was especially impressed with some ISO8000 pictures I took in the hotel room, my D800 can't do that...
Of note…the DxOMark "lens recommendations" do not show the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens as best I can tell, but it most likely would be up near the top. I am very happy the 85mm f/1.8 Nikkor is near the top group, as having the Sigma 35 and Nikkor 85 gives a nice two camera set up for carry around...
The D750 has highlight exposure system too right ? just curious.

Personally, I find the whole "best lens" thing to be an oxymoron...if not then a: paradox.
