Wooah, love the camera! All works fine except one thing I can't fully understand yet.
Just bought the Pocketwizard FlexTT-5 to be able to use my flash more often and in bright daylight off camera. But it seems to be a jungle to set it up in the Pocketwizard utility program. I've updated both to latest version, set the transmitting unit to "Transmitter only" mode in the advanced settings tab and also "Hypersync only" on both units. On the receiver I've also changed the P2 setting under Hypersync which says: "P2 Hypersync Flash Duration" to step 10 = slow. It works a lot better now and pictures at 1/8000 and 1/4000 works great.
But when I come to let's say 1/2000 or 1/2500 it doesn't work at all really. Shutter curtains showing up all over the place. But this only happens when I set the AC3 controller unit to "0" or "-" values but if I crank it all up to "+3" every setting seems to be working fine.
Does anybody else know what to do? This isn't a big deal as you could move the flash further away to get lower power but would be nice to use the AC3 controller unit as it's made for just shoot in TTL and then change the levels of different groups straight from the camera.
Is there another setting you should change for Hypersync for the receiver? I've got the latest firmware on the D810 too.
Now I've just bought more memory cards, batteries but still need a "timer control" or similar for shooting long exposures. Do you have any sugggestions? For my D5100 I used a "Aputure" controller bought cheaply from a local company. Which worked flawlessly maybe it's the same unit for D800 as the D810?
sounds like a fun setup. .. dont think is an issue with the nikon gear.. you will just have to live with the 3rd party quirks or contact them for support.

Yea, your probably right. I guess the issue is some settings in the Pocketwizard utility program but haven't found out what exactly yet. Hoping someone else with an D810 could help me out with their settings in the program.
I am new to this blog so I thought I would share some of my first impression of the D810. This is a very brief first impression I am sharing so I apologize in advance if it's not up to par for some readers.
I have been shooting since the days of Kodachrome and have older Nikon lenses that I continue to use. Several months ago I upgraded from my Nikon D800 to a D810. I have also been using the D800E. Most of the D800 and D800E camera usage was for fashion product photography in the studio for both eCommerce and print and shooting B-roll video (location and studio) for ad campaigns and various web use.
My main reason for upgrading was the video and auto focusing upgrades, as well as the timing of the launch of the D810 and my D800 usage.
My thoughts I am sharing are based on my personal real world working conditions. The conditions are constantly changing, and each individuals shooting situation and needs are different, so take everything I share with a grain of salt.
All previously noted camera bodies are excellent for stills. The D800E lack of filter can have moire issues for some, especially with certain products and video situations. As far as sharpness, if one didn't look and compare side by side, pixel by pixel, they all yield great results when using the appropriate lens combination. The one issue I noticed with the D800E body was strange focusing issues with certain older auto focus lenses while shooting people, both in the studio and location. Coming from traditional "analogue" photography the depth of field did not seem "traditional" for lack of better expression. Certain things were in focus and others not, even though "technically" speaking they were all in the range of f-stop and should be in focus. Speaking to some techs at the rental houses in NYC, it seems this is not an isolated issue for any digital camera system, and sounds to be a topic unto itself so I leave it at that. I got around the issue by using a lens combination that was more "technologically" current with the body. I have only been using a specific lens combination with the D810 so I don't know yet if this focusing issue is the same on the D810.
I recently shot video for a client with the D810 and the flat contrast mode is a great addition along with the full HD 60fps. For video, I tend to use my older Nikon "analogue" lenses. Just a personal preference.
For stills, I have been using the D810 with Nikon's inexpensive 28 - 85 VRII zoom and the 105 micro for a specific ongoing web blog project. My shooting conditions range from studio to street, and speed of delivery is paramount. Obviously quality as a photographer is most important. I shoot RAW and the images go through a Lightroom and Photoshop pipeline. If you are interesting in seeing some photos, most images on the site were shot with the camera lens combos. Please go here: http://www.rockmamanyc.com
I am shooting under a lot of different situations under different conditions, and so far the camera has worked admirably. Any short coming is due to my not knowing the camera completely and my aging eye sight. The final use is web based so I can get away with a lot more than if it were for print.
So far, so good. A lot easier than the days when the client requested only Kodachrome. And most importantly, I am (mostly) having fun shooting.
I hope this was helpful! Don't get caught up in too much of the specs because in the end, the best camera is the one you have. Happy holidays and happy shooting everyone, cheers!

Its nice to have more than 2 settings banks like on the consumer bodies and was wondering what strategies everyone uses for their settings banks on the 810. Is there any way to change which setting bank you are on while looking through the viewfinder (i.e. can a button be assigned for that?). Thank you for helping a lost soul... ~X(
There is no way to change banks while looking at the viewfinder, you need to bring up the menu on the rear LCD, either in the standard menu or the quick menu. The only other downside is that changes are automatically saved each time, so if you forget to change something back it will stay that way.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
The D810 is been offered £2349 less £300 on any camera in part exchange plus a 32Gb memory card so basically £2000 00 This is through official Nikon sources with the full 2 year warranty. Grey imports with no Nikon warranty are only £300 00 less. NR have reported the Russian Ruble has brought Nikon prices down, but will this continue? With New Year discount sales maybe the price will be shaved a little more, but think i am going to Be tempted with the official source just after Christmas.
Can anyone else hear a tiny repetitive beep when recording video with the built in mic? It's faster at 60fps and slower at 30fps but still there. I can here it when I playback on the camera (I have to hold my ear up to the mic) or when I playback on my computer as well. This nothing to do with the firmware I just updated and it was doing this before and after. I was hoping the update would fix it. I know I probably shouldn't be recording audio with the built in mic, but that's all I have. Note I'm not focusing when this is happening just to rule that out.
Thanks!
edit: Just tried with an SD card instead of CF and it's quieter but still there.
Anyone tried this out on their D810? Nikon support is being unhelpful and saying I should just send it in to be checked out, but it seems like a pretty big hassle. I don't do a lot of video, but I would like to get the camera fixed if it is indeed just a problem with my unit.
@nek4life I can try it if you don't hear from me in a day send me a pm. I have a few days of vacation but that will mean babysitting and watching cartoons with the kids.

The sound you are hearing in the video is the sound of the internal amp used to power the microphone. Not much you can do about that without using an external recording device.

So if it's the amp, even if I end up using an external mic I would have the same problem? Unfortunately I don't own a separate microphone to test with.
You would need an actual external recording device, as even microphones that plug into the camera will get some amp noise. That said, an external microphone plugged into the camera will still sound a lot better than the built in one.

That makes sense. I've always understood that you'd be better off with an external recording device like you said. I just didn't know if there was something wrong with my camera or not. I have about a week or so left on my warranty so I wanted to make sure. I don't really want to send it in if it's not really a problem. Definitely a lot quieter with an SD card. I don't shoot video very much, but it would be nice if when I did I could get some clean audio without an external mic or recorder, but c'est la vie...
The noise level will depend on the sound recording settings. If the microphone level is set to auto then you will hear differences on a clip to clip level, since the microphone will adjust based on ambient sound levels. On the other hand if you manually set the sound input level in the menu then the sound should be the same across all clips.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.
First Impressions D810. Since 2008 I have used a D3x and now a D4. After reading various comments with regard to the Zeiss Otus Lenses, I have purchased an D810. First impressions to be honest were disappointing, The build quality is nothing like the D4 , but at double the cost I suppose allowance must be made, I am sure other owners of both cameras would nod their head in agreement, However and this is very early stages of what I have seen of the test shots, I have done the combination of D810 and Otus 55 results were just incredible, On a 27inch Mac at 400% magnification the images was crystal clear, not that I normally look at this magnification, but I look forward to using the combination under normal working conditions Like all new cameras there is a getting to know period until familiarity becomes the norm.
Not too surprised. Like PB I thought the 810 was Camera of the Year as well. That shutter is so so much appreciated when shooting, and group AF is now my default...it never hunts like the older modules as it just seems locked on the subject.
So, I might be in the market for a D810 and want to know the good, bad and ugly about the D810 from D810 owners before I drop 3K on one plus the over priced grip, probably get the grip used.
I Just looked at some of the 25 pages They really are a jumble, lots of post from people who have never used a D810 I do a think a new thread on first hand experiences would be useful

This video exhibits the issue. I'm thinking it's just a noisy CF card, but who knows... https://www.dropbox.com/s/yad951v5nocdskl/before_CF.MOV?dl=0
Thanks for the reply.

This will be the best you can do without resorting to an external recorder.

25 pages that cover information on when the D810 first hit the market, but what people know 12 months later. I have better ways to spend my time.
I appreciate it.
You're welcome.
