Still haven't figured out why a videographer shooting 1080p would go for a 36Mp camera....
The sensor has nothing to do with it. It is the options available in the body that drives people to one over the other.
    D800, D300, D50(ir converted), FujiX100, Canon G11, Olympus TG2. Nikon lenses - 24mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, (5 in all)50mm, 60mm, 85mm 1.8, 105vr, 105 f2.5, 180mm 2.8, 70-200vr1, 24-120vr f4. Tokina 12-24mm, 16-28mm, 28-70mm (angenieux design), 300mm f2.8. Sigma 15mm fisheye. Voigtlander R2 (olive) & R2a, Voigt 35mm 2.5, Zeiss 50mm f/2, Leica 90mm f/4. I know I missed something...

I hope so msmoto, the D4s was going to stretch me financially, so I went D810 & will keep D300S as my backup (until D9300 comes lol). Then my husband can have D300S :)

    I accidentally bought a new 14-24 too.

Looking forward to using FX again & not swapping lenses ever second moment. I will post my first D810 bird pic here for you. ;)

    Dear all,

I would like to make you aware of a new feature of the D810 which might be of incredible value especially for landscape photographers or photographers that work with Tilt-Shift lenses and want to maximize sharpness.

I’ve had the opportunity to test a pre production model of the D810 recently and found a new functionality in the camera that could be a KILLER feature for focussing with tilt-shift lenses.
I am talking about the new split screen that allows to select 2 different points of the frame in live view and display them magnified side by side in live view.
To better understand what I mean take a short look here: forward to 13:40 min.

As you can see with the new D810 it is possible to select a focus point in the foreground and one in the background and display them in split screen live view.
This is absolutely fantastic to maximize sharpness with tilt in the manual focussing process as you see the impact on sharpness in the foreground and background at the same time.
Killer feature! Additionally the sharpness of the D810 live view is way better than one the D800 and D800E.
    http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3693657#forum-post-53957292

    Now comes the big drawback:
The two focus points have to be on the same horizontal line as you can see it in the video.
If you shoot in portrait orientation this works perfect as one focus point can be positioned to the foreground and one can be selected in the background of the scene.
If you shoot in landscape orientation it does not work as you can only move both focus points aligned on the horizontal line up and down. It is not possible to flip the line to vertical.
I hope you understand what I mean.

This feature of flipping the split screen focus points from horizontal to vertical alignment should be fairly easy to program in the firmware.
The point is that Nikon needs to be aware of that. Myself I do not know why they implemented in the way it is now.

What I am asking you now is if you see a value in this feature and would send a mail or call your Nikon Professional Service about this.
NPS is the preferred way to request improved functionality as they will contact R&D in Japan.

I have already called NPS in Germany and they told me that they were already discussing about the split screen and forwarded the request to Japan.
If other countries do the same I believe that it will be likely that Nikon works on this incredible feature for the next firmware update.

I would highly appreciate if you take some time and support by an NPS support request.

Thank you and all the best!

    Achim

I just went to my local Nikon distributor in Seoul and he told me that he will have D810 cameras in stock on Thursday the 17th. Problem is they are priced a bit high at $3700, but this includes tax. Yikes..He told me that I would receive $2700 for my D800E body, which is decent I think. So the upgrade would run me $1000 even. I am really wondering if it is worth the upgrade? I am still leaning towards yes still at this point because I like a lot of the new features such as improved noise control and true ISO 64...

@kanuck: That sounds a heck of a deal to me. In the UK you never part exchange at shops because they offer ridiculously low prices. Go for it.

Yes or they put your used gear on consignment until it sells, which is terrible. I have spent over $20,000 at this store over the past 8 years for my hobby and for work so they treat me fair and honest usually. Thanks for your opinion spraynpray.

As a heavily invested Canon shooter, it took the D800 to bring me back to Nikon. I still shoot my 1DX gear when my subjects are booking it, but the D800's are used for everything else. I've got two D810 bodies coming around the 17th. $3200 isn't an inconsequential investment, but if you have been used to 6-7 grand for top pro bodies, it kind of feels like the deal of the century.

I agree that the edge the 810 adds will probably be marginal, but the auto focus upgrade and slight buffer improvement will be nice to have. I shoot all my DSLR video with the 1DX's because I haven't been pleased with the choppy exposure adjustments on the D800 in video mode.

JWilson, that sure is an awesome combo wow! A 1DX and a D800/D810. I hear the 1DX outperforms the D4 in terms of focus and speed. The D4 can hunt from time to time especially if there is distracting backgrounds or objects moving near your subject. The D4s is the top dog now until Canon offers a refresh I guess. I cannot wait until the 17th when D810 bodies arrive in stores.

No matter what the setting is, my D4 has never given me a issue in finding focus....specialy in very dark setting. And I have taken plenty of shot in complet darkness.

Fair enough Golf I just saw on Digital Review on Youtube with D4 and 1DX going head to head, but lots of variables involved and Digital Review is dodgy in their reviews anyways I think..

I really need to know if my Really Right Stuff D800E L-Plate will fit the new D810. Any thoughts??? I really don't want to fork over another $200 for a new plate...

The D810 appears to be slightly bigger even though it is 20 grams lighter:

    146 x 123 x 81.5mm 144.78 × 121.92 × 81.28mm

    +1 @ WestEndBoy

@kanuck: I made the call and accruing to them, their current L-Plates for the D800/D800e will all work with the D810.

My husband likes the D300, actually we both do. I always let him think he's in the drivers seat ;)

I was just joking, because @Msmoto took it for granted you're female (I think so, too). These days gay couples can also marry in various countries and they're also talking of their husbands - logically both. Sanook appears to be mostly a name for ladies but can also be family name? However, I don't hope you feel offended, I was just teasing the racing-bike lady who likes the guys on the second seat. Most probably because we're just wonderful, patient, smart and supportive co-drivers / passengers :D

    Now, back to the D810…..LOL
As a sort of on topic note…. i am headed for a photo shoot using both my "new" D800E and "old" D4. Having never used both at once, this should be interesting. But, it would appear the D810 can perform nearly all the tasks of this pair except the high FPS. I shoot the D800E in DX mode for the most part.
