I don't know if anyone read the most recent blog, but when they asked the Nikon head of development executives at the CP show if there was going to be a D300s replacement: No response
Probably means they are trying to keep tight lip on something crazy
Who started this goofy thread anyway? Maybe we should change it and put it under the humor section…. )
You are so funny. Thanks for making me laugh. I did not have to go to page 1...I knew which moderator opened this tread. LoL. It's good to see you can laugh at yourself.

Hi all I'm kinda new, at least to the forum anyway. I've spent a long time waiting for perfect wildlife DX camera. Nikon needs to be aware that we need a D300S replacement, and a lot sooner than later!!. Nikon are scratching in the dirt behind Canon. Surely it can't be that hard to give the D300S a serious upgrade and bring the brand back into favouritism with thousands of wildlife photographers, and sports alike.
My ideal would be : 51 AF points 8-10 fps - with a large buffer Iso reaching over 12,800, but very low noise high up! Fast focus drive Rapid 3D tracking D300S size, so it'll balance well on a 600mm or 800mm lens (and with an additional power grip for extra battery life ) Nikons superb 'auto iso' feature, that I already use so often on a daily basis. 18 - 24 mg, even just 16 maybe Water tight body, and strong with it!!!

Probably a bit more on top......
Pity we can't email a request in to Nikon!!
Bri..
Sure you can. Send them an RFQ with the above specs and see how they respond. If you order 3, you can probably sell the two extra for a profit.
omegabri, if you could get a camera like that produced (and make it available for $2,200 USD) I'm willing to bet that about 50 of us on this forum would line up with credit cards in hand.

How much would you be willing to bet?
Would you be willing to guarantee to Omegrabri that you would buy any unsold units?
Would you be willing to guarantee to Nikon that you would buy any unsold units required for Nikon to earn a decent profit (say a half million)?
I bet the cost of 1 body (the one that I purchase). But then again, I'm no gambling man. Frankly, I don't think they do it, because it has the potential to eat into the sales of longer lenses.
Bri, everyone here wants the same thing you want. I will disagree with one thing you said however, which is that canon has no dog in this fight either. The canonites are waiting for the mythical 7D Mark II just as much as the Nikon faithful are for the D400. We have all looked at all of the brands out there and so far there is no DX (APS-C), high-ISO, 10fps beastie available anywhere on the planet or we would all go buy one.
I currently only use a D90. It gets hammered everywhere and does me proud, but it's struggling with my wildlife photography. The problem I have is I want to upgrade, but find the DX crop factor very useful. I just wish there were a better faster spec on the D7100...........or an actual D400 in the making
I used to use a D90, from there I went to a D700 then a D800. Plenty of D700s for sale (including mine) at very sensible prices
Do you really need 8- fps? if not, the D800 is a brilliant camera, after the D90 it will blow your soaks off. For wild life, look at the work of David Lloyd, yes he uses the very expensive 200-400 f 4 but the new 80 -400 while not cheap with a D800 it is superb combination
for "reach" you can simply crop the D800 image ether in camera or , like me, in post
( I have Not seen any photographic proof, the D7100 IQ is significantly better than a cropped D800 image)
I've considered a D800 but I'm afraid that for bird photography its fps, huge buffer, high iso and fast focus that I crave... I may consider a D800 anyway for landscape work, but no. 1 priority is on my wildlife photography at the moment!
A part of me wants to call it quits and buy the D610 since it has 6 FPS, which is enough for the photography I do. But I would certainly miss being able to shoot at 8 FPS and the crop sensor.
I do use the D800 for birds in flight - it's hard, but when you get it just right the pictures can be mind blowing - but with its slow FPS I'm missing a lot of special moments.
Problem is that the 2000 is from 100 people that are going round in circles. I'd be surprised if they sold 50 cameras to the people on this thread as half of us got fed up and bought something else.
Yup 2000+ posts…. but my guess is if the D400 comes out in two or three months it better walk on water. I have waited so long to replace my D90, I am looking for a mirrorless Nikon with a crop sensor which will perform like a DX D4. So, a D400 with specs similar to the D4s, OK. Otherwise, I can wait another year or so...

+1 and Yes I was one of those that got fed up and bought something else.

but the only camera that comes close, cost nearly $6,000
sorry, putting a Dx sensor in it, is not going to knock $4,000 off the price

I only went up to ISO 1000 but IQ was in a different league to my old D90
more fps would be nice but if you are patient, you will get the shot

As for landscapes (my passion) the D800 is gobsmackingly amazing
but if wild life is your passion and you really do need fps, the D4s is the answer

Ah yes, but most seem to bought Nikon and by time the D400 comes out, they will be looking for another upgrade
Nikon are listening
