ABout 3-D tracking...I could never get it to work for motorsports. C-AF, nine point works. The lock on time can be either "off" or if there are such things as fences, trees, in the panning path, make the adjustment as necessary. For the most interesting shots, shooting at about 1 over 3 times the vehicle speed will give a nice effect. One will catch about 1/4 of the shots or more dependent on one's practice.

    However, for me today:

There are some wonderful photos here folks. I love to check each day to see something new. The variety is great and provides so much inspiration to move out of my comfort zone. To everyone posting, WELL DONE! Here's my post for the day. A few months ago we had yet another snowstorm come through and I wanted to get out to shoot something. I found this lone leaf and it just seemed to make a nice photo.

    Should I try the 3D?
NO!!!! I've tried using that 3D Tracking countless times and it's worthless shooting motorsports. AF-C is good and for some reason I always get better results with the single point auto focus but any of the auto focus patterns will work.

Also, go to your Focus Tracking With Lock On and turn it to OFF. It's in your Autofocus menu just under the AF-S and AF-C Priority Selection. Someone on here suggested for me to do that and it's made a huge difference.

    Good luck shooting today!

I did try the 3D and you are right, after two cars I went back to my center weighted focus. It could not keep up.

@Msmoto- Thanks! There are support cables and loudspeakers that get in the way. I am panning the best I can. The Joby ball-head on my monopod provides some stiffness for smoother control. I will give your advice a go tomorrow for the main event :)
    Beautiful shot BTW :)

@squamishphoto - oh new model, she is lovely, so is the picture
@dredden85 - get some more breathing to Your subjects, don't compose centrally in this kind of snaps as You can't feel the atmosphere on this picture. I'll move the cars more to right and show a little bit more of the curve.

OMT - You may try to use focus trap on Your camera, this will fire the shutter once the cars go in focus.

As I mentioned yesterday, I've never really tried editing in Aperture. Here's my first attempt, my goal being to improve the snap I posted yesterday. I started with cropping and dodging. Dodging didn't quite do the trick as the black hair was my big problem, so I had to play with the shadows, resulting in the leaves being a bit less than perfect. But I am pretty happy with this, seeing as I have no idea what I am doing. Any and all suggestions about how to improve appreciated. (Via PM if it's bad form to solicit such comments on the PAD thread.)

    Thanks!

To Gitzo, as related to my forum topic that seemed to really confuse the poor, fellow NR member. :)>-
Just to prove that I actually own that lenses that I would go through the trouble of posting serious topics about...I wanted Gitzo to know that while my bag may be downright pathetic and truly unworthy of NikonRumor membership as compared to others, it's the very best I can afford at the moment. The 105mmVR I am repairing is fourth from the left. The (damaged) lower barrel I replaced is obviously between the 24-120 & the 105VR. The screws I used as a temporary fix for the mounting ring on the 105VR came from the old manual focus lens situated between the 105mm & 70-200/2.8. If you visit my Flickr account, I've actually posted a set named "Lenses" that shows more detailed pics of this used lens that I am fixing myself -- however foolishly it may appear to be. Too good not to share. Alternative birding. Aka the dark side of spring.

Honk if you think I'm sexy.
Don't try, don't know, so I keep trying.
