I just realized why Nikon has been delaying the D400. They are in cahoots with Adobe, and the D400 will only be supported in the new CC edition.

I also contacted Nikon Tech Support about having my D300 cleaned and brought back to specification. I asked when there would be a replacement for the D300/D300s and here is there response:

"To the best of my knowledge nothing new is planned in D300 line at this time. There are many new and exciting entries into the Nikon family you may wish to consider if you decide on an upgrade, including our new flagship camera, the D7100. If you decide to upgrade, I would be pleased to assist you in making a choice you would be happy with."

Notice the reference to the "flagship" D7100.

Just adding fuel to the fire.

Usual tech support answer. I wouldn't take anything any of them say at face value. Nikon Japan... you know the flagship company, isn't calling the D7100 their flagship DX body, so I think I'll take their word over Nikon USA. ;)
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

PB_PM, Good point about Nikon Japan over Nikon USA.

I just don't buy the comment that the D7100 is a flagship camera. It's good but not in the class with the D300/D300s.

Actually the Go Pro 3s have an awful lot of problems. But then it is only a $400 CAMERA WHICH IS SELLING TONS OF CAMERAS, WITH ACCEPTABLE QUALITY AND FANTASTIC RANGE OF USES! D400 is though incredibly overdue!

Haven't posted anything in awhile because really there isn't any info out there but I think something is a foot. I check craigslist at least daily, because good deals go fast but the point is there has been an interesting change. In the past few weeks the number of D300 and D700 for sale has shot up and the prices of the D300's have come down dramatically. I'm seeing used D300's for under $500 USD. Now this doesn't mean Nikon is doing anything but the zeitgeist has seemed to shift and D300 owners are jumping ship. Does this mean they are moving to the D800 or are they thinking the D400 is coming soon? I read one web page reviewing theD5200 says the D400 was the only thing left for Nikon to do.... Hope they are right

I think that indicates people are buying the D7100, D600 and D800 instead. Maybe they are realising they don't need the D400 really and those that do really need one are still hanging on. Judging by the shots I see from the D300/s it isn't an urgently needed upgrade, but it is overdue (and then some).

I think that people who have more money than they need are just into upgrading their gear because they like to not because they really need to.

Nikon will either hit a home run with the D400.....or a foul ball.

And, the longer we wait, the more spectacular the D400 will have to be to garner in sales. Let's hope for a home run.

    Oh, for the non-baseball folks....either a 10 or a zero...LOL

I agree with Andrewz...I really think people have given up on a D400 and they are buying D7100's and D600's or D800s. I went to the largest camera store in Madison, WI and they have a clean D300 with less than 3K shutter activations for $680 and a clean D300s for $800 at their east side store and at the west side store they had two D300. All trades within the last month.

To quote Andrewz: Haven't posted anything in awhile because really there isn't any info out there but I think something is a foot.

Well the real reason I went to look at the D7100 for the second time was that I read the review in Popular Photography. I am jumping ship because I have a back up plan. I have two friends that want my D300 and I am tired of waiting on Nikon. As soon as I sell my D300 & battery grip and extra batteries and memory cards I am buying a D7100. I can use the extra mega pixels and other improvements. My style shooting doesn't need a huge buffer, it's a nice that this is not a requirement.

If Nikon introduces the D300 replacement and it fits my requirements, I will buy it and sell the wives D90 and give her the D7100. A win win situation.

The bad news, the D300 is selling for much less on Craig's List and eBay than six months ago and one year ago. There was no camera to jump to one year ago but there is now. Don't like the grip on the D7100 but everything else is good. I can live with the smaller grip.

"I really think people have given up on a D400 and they are buying D7100's"

Guilty as charged - just put my order in for a D7100. Got sick of waiting, and I have a definite need for a better AF system, the one in my D5100 just wasn't keeping up with fastish wildlife and I was missing shots.

Of course that means a D400 will be imminently released :-) I figure I can always ebay the 7100 if that happens.

The D7100 is worth the price for certain. I have no problem adding a D400 when and if it ever comes out and the price is not WAY to high. I think Nikon better be aiming for a $1,800 camera than a $2,600 camera. Many would just say then........OK I'll take a D800. DX cameras HAVE to sell for less to be worth the difference from FX and the extra weight of a D400 say compared to D7100 which I would say has already made its mark. It is indeed a fine camera. When I pick up a D800 my first thought is this is a monster.
  • PB_PMPB_PM Posts: 4,493Member
Why do you think monster? The D800 is only marginally taller than the D300. Which would make it only marginally larger than a D400 would be. The size and weight difference between those bodies is negligible. I heard the same arguments about the D300 vs D700. I have both, in practice there are no differences.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

PB_PM.....I think Davel was comparing the size of the D7100 to the D800, not D300 to D800.

Even if DaveyJ did mean the D7100 vs the D800 I still don't get it. The D300 isn't much smaller than the D800. :-S

Many people do "feel" a big difference between the D7000/D7100 size and the D300/D700/D800 size bodies. Those whose hands are used to the DX body feel the FX body is much larger and heaver. Those whose hands are used to the FX body feel the DX body "cramps" their fingers. I use both body sizes (even the tiny D3100 size body) and find my hands adjust to either body size after using it for a few days. Perhaps my hands and fingers are in the middle, not too small or too large.

yes but the D300 is a DX Camera
  • donaldejosedonaldejose Posts: 3,417Member
Yes, D300 has the DX sensor but I believe the body size is almost the same as the larger D700/D600 FX "pro" size: sort of a DX sensor in an FX size body. People used to shooting the D300 often claim the D7000 is so much smaller it cramps their fingers. When the DX D400 comes out the odds are it will use an adaptation of the D800 body, if not the exact same body. Once again, it will be a DX sensor in an FX size body with the "pro" controls. Hopefully we will see it later this summer.

@Donaldjose: I have the D7000 and find my little finger is constantly displacing the rubber bung on the grip side. I normally fit battery grips to my bodies but when this was last discussed I said I wouldn't because the D7K grip only holds one battery and so you have to remove it to charge the other one BUT, I am so fed up with the little finger situation that I am going to get a cheapy Mielke grip for off-hand shooting.

Unless they HURRY UP AND GIVE US THE D400!! ~X( :))

I really don't understand the impatience. If a D400 does not appear in August or early September I'm sure there wont be one (that seems to be the time frame when that line of bodies gets updated). Until then, don't get your shorts in a knot.
