The resident Blue Heron (Max) at Big Lagoon State Park, FL. This is the same guy I had snapped a photo of him snatching up a fish back in November '13. He was entertained with Photobug and I circling for a good angle.
December 9th - I decided to spend Monday to Wednesday, December 9th to 11th, hiking from the Delaware Water Gap to Culvers Gap, NJ, about 27 miles further north on the Appalachian Trail. I got a very late start to the day, though now I can't remember what took me so long to get going. Started hiking away from the Delaware Water Gap after 1730, after the day's last light had failed, thinking I would go to the backpacker campsite 4 miles away or maybe a little beyond that. Instead I went 11 miles that night, all the way to the Catfish Fire Tower. Here is a photo from the south end of Sunfish Pond, with my camera set on a bench and the foreground painted by my headlamp.
I only did a couple takes of this shot, since it was late at night and I had my hiker momentum going and it's hard staying still for many long exposures when it's very cold out. Lightweight long-distance hikers are supposed to keep warm by being in their sleeping bags or being in motion!

December 10th - When I camped at Catfish Fire Tower, I pitched my hammock directly to that fire tower. The ground was mostly ice, and the temperature was around 15 degrees that night. I started out very early in the morning, not taking breakfast since there was no liquid water at hand here.

Some really nice work on PAD. My time has been spent late at night with some of the boys who are installing new control hardware and software at the Three College Observatory, so an image taken in the most horrid of conditions…..
They are looking at the first image from a CCD on the telescope with which, as the scope is moved around the sky, these images will be used to calibrate the control software… or at least that is my understanding…..
When editing this shot I saw that the floor was quite scratched so it would take quite a lot of usage of healing brush / clone stamp to get it fixed, but then I thought let's do something more radical, so I made a high key black and white layer and used blend mode in Photoshop. Think it turned out ok.
