After the recent Canon rumors 7D ii announcement I thought this thread would be buzzing. =
well the buzz is, Nikon should produce a DX camera with the full features of a D4 selling for $1,800

All Nikon would need to add, is a completed range of pro Dx lens, selling for a third of their FX equivalent

and that would stir up the hornets nest

For anyone interested, there's a thread on Ugly Hedgehog showing a picture of the back of what someone said is the new D400. Here's a link: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-165145-1.html

Me, I have my doubts. Especially with an articulated screen, but then one never knows........

    Nikon D7100; AF-S DX 35mm f1.8; AF-S DX Macro 40mm f2.8; AF-S DX 18-200mm VRII; SB-700 Speed Light and a bunch of other not very noteworthy stuff......

Not a chance that is real. It's just the back of the D300s with a wired screen. It doesn't have the modern LV/movie switch for one thing. The +/- zoom buttons also have not been updated either. Dead giveaways that it is a fake, IMO.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

Looks a little bit too much like a D300s, but I wouldn't mind if the D400 will look like this.

The best part of this layout is the focus points switch. Even with thick gloves you can easily switch between one and many focus points (push it up for flying birds and down for sitting birds, very logical). I miss it a lot on the D800.

Couldn't agree more! If you need to switch quickly (like many wild life photographers do), the D800 sucks at this! I hate that little button on the side. Would have been great if we could assign a new button for this in a future FW update. The switch was perfect! No idea what they were thinking getting rid of that switch! I never use the info button...

bump and the below text from Thom Hogan (I like the D400 name much better by the way :p). I agree with his thinking. I haven't given up hope yet. We'll see soon enough if the rumours start to pick up on nikonrumors.

What’s a D9000? That would be the D300s replacement, I think. Essentially the pro (or at least prosumer) top of the DX line model. I’ve been fending off “Nikon will never do a D300s replacement” comments for well over a year now, as the faithful have lost faith. Nikon certainly gave them no reason to keep the faith, that’s for sure. But Nikon simply can’t let the D300 go into the history bin with no replacement. That would be the most foolish decision they could make. I can’t see how they would make such a terrible decision. It’s bad enough that they skipped an update cycle for the Dxxx product, but it would be far worse for them to never do one.

I’ll make this bet: Canon will update their equivalent product in 2014. That would make a Nikon no show even worse than it already is. Let me put it another way: if Nikon doesn’t put out a D300 replacement (my expected D9000 for 2014), then they’ve so completely lost touch with their most loyal shooter base that they deserve the punishment that will ensue: switchers to Canon, more leakers to mirrorless. I say it won’t happen. Nikon will launch a D9000, and likely before the end of spring 2014, most likely in February.

Well D300user...you nicely summarized all of our feelings. This forum was on the second page because of no post in weeks and now you brought it back to page one. :D

Oh how I want a D400/D9000 (not sure why you did not call it a D8000) but I think the Nikon marketing group has lost touch with their most loyal shooter base. I hope your right but I doubt it will happen.

Thom insisted that the camera would come out in the summer of 2012 and then 2013, neither of which came to pass. Thom is a knowledgeable person, but he is just guessing and listening to rumors like the rest of us.

Crikey, the D3200 is a great camera but they are refreshing it already - why don't they give us the freaking D400!

More updates than expected ... or needed, one would say.
Like Thom talked about ... the updates are of a kind that could be made by a "B team".
    What's the A team doing?
Nikon used to have - they MUST have had - a fair amount of ace engineers earlier, but are they all retired, working for others now, or simply wasting their time on the 2014 D620, which will be the same as D610 but with built-in wifi and GPS?

I am guessing Nikon had a D400 ready to go but decided to withhold it and introduce other more volume oriented bodies. And, as long as Canon did not drop their new crop format prosumer model on the market, Nikon followed suit. At present, the first D400 version is now out of date and requires some newer technology to be competitive. But, if Canon makes the move, I wood suspect Nikon will be right there next to them on the podium.

I think we have to expect Nikon to be rational. If right now they could produce a D400 which met critera needed for such a camera they would because they do need more product to generate more revenue. But they cannot now produce what a D400 has to be. Why? My best guess is they are awaiting some new technology. What new technology? Carbon fiber infused plastic body? Sensor improvement? Pixel binning software for better higher ISO from a DX sensor? Auto focus improvement? Anyone else have better ideas?

    Electronic shutter improvement?
Eye tracking control for auto focus :-)
(When software is allowed to grow too much, completely new levels of delays become possible.)

    Real, Corinthian leather.

Given Nikon's last few shaky quarters, I must agree: if they had a D400 ready to go, they wouldn't be holding it back.
