Like Thom talked about ... the updates are of a kind that could be made by a "B team".
    What's the A team doing?

The A-team was the guys who f****d up with the D600 ( and The D7000 & D800 initially - oil/dust/BF issues ) . Nikon fired the whole lot and whatever they had for the D400 on the drawing board was taken away/destroyed by them :)

    Either that or they retired.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

They saw the work of the "B" team (aka sinking ship) and decided to bail.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

It's the only rumored Nikon DSLR we know of at this point, so it seems likely that it would be the D3300.

I won't get excited until I see a picture or pre released specs. Then I will get excited. I expect the D4X will be announced prior to the Olympics, Feb 6th.

I give up Nikon, you just lost a D400 sale. I bought the D7100 for its great hi ISO. My D7000 is backup now.
    Always learning.

Nikon lost nothing, you wanted a camera they weren't making. The only way Nikon would have lost out is if you bought nothing.

Thanks! I look forward to posting some images from it. At the moment I have been busily swatting on the new facilties and doing test images.

Well, strictly speaking, that is only true if the D400 was going to be the same price and margins as the D7100 is which I doubt!

You are still assuming that there will be a D400, by that statement.

Of course! IMHO the 'D400' will be here, it just isn't clear yet what form it will take. Rumours of the 7DII are getting stronger, so I expect to hear rumours of a D400 by next summer and a launch by the end of the year.

No doubt me buying a D7100 has helped!

I would rather have FX in the field with a high megapixeld density (D800 or D4x) and crop. An FX camera with a high megapixel density matches DX in this circumstance where "reach" is desired and superior in any other situation where "reach" is not required.

And then there is low light performance, a common issue in wildlife photography.

And the glass. No DX glass will match Nikon's long telephotoes, though I guess some people just bolt their DX cameras on these.

DX cameras are a little smaller and lighter, but when it is on a 10lb telephoto, I doubt you would notice the difference. Plus, there is no technical reason Nikon could not make FX smaller.

So, ONE application (long reach) where reasonable people can argue that FX or DX might be better. Nearly every other situation FX technically trumps DX and the rest of the advantages (cost, size) will disapear as FX comes down in cost.

What is the point of all this? A DX professionial camera does not seem to be a profitable long-term strategy though it might have legs for a few more years. Nikon knows this which is why there not really any pro-grade DX glass.

I understand the appeal of the D400. While a D9000 might be a nice gift, I think an FX body, perhaps a D710, is more likely.

I also acknowledge that this is essentially crystal ball gazing. Who knows what Nikon is really thinking?

You're right, we don't know what's in Nikon's crystal ball. But.......If Canon releases a 7 DMIII, one can pretty much bet Nikon will have something to compete with it.

Definitely. Then you may still get a D400 later, and another FX at the end. I think that's Nikon's plan. :)

I agree. I also feel that Canon/Nikon think this is the last pro DX iteration. So they are dragging their feet to the last possible moment.

I still hope DX isn't dying. I don't need FX and I have no FX glass. My needs are met quite nicely by DX and so are the needs of the vast majority of shooters out there.

We were at Best Buy a few times this holiday season. It was amazing to see so many people buying DSLR's from Canon and Nikon, all in DX. They'll really tick off a high percentage of the photo buying public if DX goes away.

I don't mean regular DX is going away, rather the pro DX usage. Because as jshickele mentioned and I agree too, the main benefits of DX (fps, cost, pixel density) are going to be less and less an issue on FX.

They will still be able to use DX glass on FX with quality just as good as they are used to and will even include the reach. I don't think anybody will have anything to be ticked off at when they think about it. It will be like dual DX/FX camera that morphs from a DX to an FX as the FX glass replaces the DX.

The 24 MP DX cameras have the highest pixel density (/reach) in the Nikon DSLR lineup. Not even the D800 comes close. To say that the reach is included if you use a DX lense on an FX camera is just too crazy.

And of course i totally argued that DX will win in the end.. just needs nikon's infatuation with FX to pass then they will realise its a DX world after all.. ;-)

Well, I hope both worlds can happily coexist. There are those who need FX and I'm glad they have great options. And there are people like me, who are happily shooting away with DX and I hope we continue to have great options as well.

Should we revive this thread ? "Why FX is a dead format. Dx will rule.." http://nikonrumors.com/forum/topic.php?id=271

It was fun re reading it - My post of 4 years ago predicting the D600/D610 had me feeling like I am a genius!
We also predicted a Mirrorless camera! how cool! Some interesting developments since then as well like the CX format. and the Mirrorless DX cameras from Fuji ... yup! could be fun reviving that thread for a bit ! :-)
