Pippi, from Louisiana here. I'm jealous actually. Living in S.Diego, but miss that time of year in N.O. Other than that, they can keep it. Too crowded, too much crime, too poor.
Yeti, amazing how snow can be such a godsend in some places and such a nightmare in others. Superb colors moto. D90 | 24-70 | 70mm | f/5 | 1/1250s | ISO 400
@donaldjose how do you find the 40mm micro? Im looking for a more dedicated macro lens for when im walking but dont want the outlay of a 105 incase a d400 surfaces
mk2pop: I just posted on my flicker account 4 winter snow scenes I took with this lens this morning. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76080384@N03/ You can study those images and see what you think. They were all taken with a D5100. I agree with reviewers who say it is a fine macro lens, especially for the price, with one significant issue: if you are trying to shoot 1:1 you will find that your lens is very, very close to the subject being photographed. This presents two problems: 1. Living animals will flee from this one eyed monster so you won't be able to use this lens to photograph butterflies. It will be fine for flowers. 2. Because your lens, camera and you are so close to the subject being photographed you will often be blocking light to your subject. I agree with this review: http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/40mm-f28.htm So how do you get around the close focus blocked light macro issue? Use strong light from the side and you will be ok. Here is a photo shot with that 40mm macro lens on a D90. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76080384@N03/7985282310/in/photostream I was very close but using strong sidelight so my subject was not in my shadow. You can also shoot on an overcast day or hazy bright day so there are no strong shadows. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76080384@N03/7979448540/in/photostream
Thanks for that, im looking for something to carry on my 2nd body when im out shooting in the wilderness, i was also looking at the 60mm, Sigma 105mm or Tamron 90mm, but i have the chance of a 40mm at a great price, will be used for flower macros handheld mostly, i was also thinking of using my sb400 on an sc28 and bracket to stop the shadow if im too close

Slightly iffy weather today, I swear British weather is so temperamental.
A bit noisy, but I liked the color.

Awaiting a DX D400
You could also consider the Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro. I have that lens and it is great. Here is a photo taken with it on a D800. Look at the detail in the dial. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76080384@N03/7895983844/sizes/k/in/photostream/
Finally, you could consider the old Nikon 60mm D macro lens. Here is a photo taken with that lens on a D800.. http://www.flickr.com/photos/76080384@N03/7906346798/sizes/l/in/photostream/
Any of these macro lenses will be about half or less the price of the Nikon 105 macro, especially if you find them used.
