It is A combined with disciplined saving. I only go into debt for my principles residence or an investment that will pay a multiple of the interest rate.
Yes spending money is always uneasy, Now, Should I wait until I get an e-mail saying a Nikon D850 has arrived, or just go out and buy a Phaseone XF 100mp outfit. I just hate sitting on the fence. LOL
I have met a few Phase 1 Photographers and they seem to be mostly landscape photographers. Not many portraits and certainly not sports, action or news. The ergonomics don't seem to be up to that. If Nikon offered a large medium format alternative I would already be into it.
If you are happy with your Nikon, then buy the D850. I am going to be patient and see how far I can take my current gear. I think the limiting factor for now is me.
In the same token, I am watching medium format (real medium format, not the medium format lite that Fuji is offering) with interest.
Paulr, I don't know enough about you to directly answer your question.

I would love to be able to say this about D850 level equipment. For my purposes, the highlighted section is still very true, but I'm shooting a D7200 and a D610. LOL
The D850 is a all application camera, The Digital Medium Format is certainly not. However most pro Photographers seem to prefer the PhaseOne system rather than what else is on the market today in that Medium Format world. I have used a D810 with Zeiss Otus and Milvus lenses and found the quality takes you nearly to Medium Format level . The D850 should push the quality even further, but it can never match a sensor that is 2 and 1/2 bigger, which medium format has. The down side is medium format is limited only to certain applications such as Portrait and Landscape Photography
.But the D810 with its array of lenses would be a great back-up system.
My D850 has been sitting at my delivery address in the US since Wednesday ...just got it sent to me this morning....quickly did a few test shots....Jpegs from the camera'
I also think it would be a good camera for many portrait photographers. However, as one said, "If you and your subject move around a lot it is a pain.". I move around alot.
And since I am not in a hurry to spend $100k on a body and three lenses, I will wait and see how this space evolves.
The rep tells me that the lenses are designed to exploit a 200mp sensor. If true (and if you think about the engineering and physics, it could be) then this space can become interesting indeed.
Looks like the next shipment of D850s has hit the shops. I just got a call and mine is on the way from Pictureline in Salt Lake City, UT. I'm guessing B&H will start notifying preorders today. Guess it's time to cancel my order there. Or do I wait until I have camera in hand to cancel.
"Looks like we are at the life size portraits with sharp eye-lashes that some people are crazy for. Wow." Richard Avedon's In The American West was shot with an 8x10 view camera. FX can almost do the same today! www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNWe_vHAQ5s I would not have thought that was possible with a 35mm size digital sensor.
Well I will have made somebody happy, cancelled my order of my D850 Moved to greener pastures.
Was yours a pre-order? I found 1 in stock but they are not selling it to me because they have it on hold for a Sheriff until their budget clears end of month.
