Does Nikon offer pre-ordering? Where does everyone do their pre-ordering from? Is there a pre-order discussion somewhere I can look at?
Most stores will let you preorder within an amount of time. Amazon, B&H, Adorama all have some sort of preordering. You should be able to go to the product page when it is announced and then go through their process. If it is the D750 keep an eye out here and there is usually a post on the blog about places.

What's the benefit? Is there a reason why most do not order from Nikon?

A video of Sigma making their lenses. It's always nice to put people to a product.

It's very artsy. I wonder if they shot it with their own lenses. I'm also curious what video camera they used. Maybe a D800. :D

When the lens is $11,000, $500 is chump change haha. Perhaps they make it out of carbon fiber?

Interesting question PaRealtor. For pre releases I wonder where the Nikon store is in the pecking order with the big NYC stores like B&H and Adorama.

For gear that has been on the market for a while, big advantages not to order from Nikon. The big stores are throwing in free merchandise to get around the fixed prices.

Free "Stuff". That's a Perfect reason to order from one of them instead. Thanks Photobug & tcole1983

Sorry I misunderstood the question. Actually buying directly from Nikon. I haven't purchased anything directly from Nikon or immediately when it was released, but only rarely have I seen prices directly from Nikon very competitive. Nikon still sells refurbished outdated bodies for ridiculous amounts of money, but I have seen a product or two drop into pretty good deal range at times. At least right at release there might not be much difference in price, but Nikon charges tax to everywhere and I don't think shipping is usually free. Two things that can be had from online retailers. They do sometimes include freebies, but I haven't seen that really all the frequently unless you buy sets or kits of stuff which usually includes some junk. I did see like the D810 included a memory card and something else at B&H or Adorama.

That's true, I've never bought anything directly from Nikon. If I get things from retailers I usually get it slightly cheaper.

When I got the D7000 I got a free LowePro toploader and a 16 gig Sandisk memory card for free for around $950, before the D7100 came out.

Same here: I go to the Nikon sight in the hope that they would sell stuff cheaper, but it never is. Mind you, if it was cheap, their outlets would be pissed as they couldn't compete so pretty pointless really.

Nikon.com has 10% off all refurbished items now through Labor Day

For example, order a D810 from B&H and you get $98 in free stuff. But no 2% or 4% in a rebate for future use. Once you become a member, and the camera has been on the market for a while, you will see a 2% rebate that you get after 90 days. When the model becomes mature you see 4% rebates. Of course, free shipping and no taxes unless you live in NY.

I used my 4% rebate to buy the WiFi adapter, total out-of-pocket cost for the WiFi adapter was just over $3.00.

I got three emails this weeks, including Nikon about new pricing on refurbished items. The D610 and D600 were the models on sale.

Yes, Free Shipping and No Tax works for me! The 2% or 4% would be a Nice Bonus!
    Thanks for the Explanation!

If you shoot jpg, you can buy one of these a year and keep it to back up your photos.
512 gb is the same size as the hard drive in my MacBook Pro. I've only used about 400 or so gigs, including all the photos I've ever taken. Plus all the schoolwork I have.

That looks like some sort of microscope lens, there isn't even a bayonette mount.

i found out a bit more about it. It was used to make circuit boards .. to use it as a macro lense you need to reverse mount it. then you get 1:4 - 1:8 magnification using extension tubes !

So - Panamoz - Anybody used them? They say not uk sourced bodies, but they pay for Nikon UK service if it fails within three years - is this true? Bonkers low prices there...

They do seem to support this site.

but they pay for Nikon UK service if it fails within three years .
    Read the small print

    They promise a UK service
    They promise Nikon service
They don't promise UK Nikon service
If you have a claim in the UK your camera will be sent to Hong Kong
    Then eventually back to you
lots of stuff on the web about them at the end of the day your stuff will be fixed, but don't expect it to happen overnight .
You will not be able to registrar the equipment with Nikon UK

Interesting @sevencrossing. They sent me an email saying service would be via Nikon UK but each of my many grey hairs is the result of some salesman lying to me so naturally I am suspicious.... ;-)

They say 'locally stocked' 'rest of world sourced brand new', first year replacement warranty, 2nd and 3rd year local repair warranty.

Example: D750 with 24-70 f2.8 £2190 as opposed to best UK price of £2934 which is a whopping £744 saving.

If Nikon UK refused to touch grey imports, I wouldn't even think about it but as it is, and with a three year warranty, it isn't a big worry.

I have to say it is tempting.

M-up. I dununnerstan Nikon's thinking. My cameras have m-up and delayed exposure but no ability to hold the mirror up while taking multiple exposures. Does anybody know if any of the after market apps actually get into the software/firmware and hold the mirror up allowing multiple exposures without flapping the mirror unnecessarily? Obviously it would be great for focus stacking.

Live View? Seems to keep the mirror fairly "up-ish" In looking at the docs for "controlmynikon" they support focus stacking only on cameras that support live view, so apparently they are leveraging this "feature" as well.

    Free trial buddy ;-)
  • spraynprayspraynpray Posts: 6,545Moderator
I'll give it a go when I have some time in the coming weeks, but I expect the mirror to do its usual pointless gymnastics using controlmynikon too. I am sure they would boast about it if it were a feature.
    Always learning.

I looked at the forum rules and didn't notice any particular guidlines, so what is the general rule regarding the use of existing threads discussing topic XYZ (that might be 1, 2, 3+ years old) versus starting a new one?
