So what do we really think is behind this new body by Nikon? Will it truly be to deal with the dust/oil issue? What feature will nikon incorporate into it? Will it have the AA-filter? Faster FPS? XQD card slot? GPS...WIFI?

All ideas are welcomed.

it will be black is my first guess. lol. maybe a new mirror and auto focus array rather than borrowing one from the d7000

i think feature wise it should be equivalent to the D7000 -> D7100
ie it should have all the D7100 features.. eg the 51 AF system. all the soft ware features like HDR, Timer etc.
Not sure about the "No AA filter" as its Pixel density may not be high enough to warrant it.

My guess, they will add Wifi, GPS and fix dust/oil issue. Nothing else will change.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

I REALLY hope this fixes the problem for once and for all. I am wondering about those who bought dirty D600's tho - what about them?

My guess on spec is with PB_PM - or perhaps just the fix as it isn't time for an upgrade yet?

I have high hopes for the D610 and suspect the D600 will no longer be produced or offered. So what will be added?

    1. Dust issue eliminated by using a "new" part, which could just be the same old part but actually cleaned before inserted this time!

    2. Different, better, wider autofocus module. I would like to see it cover the full screen.

    3. Larger buffer. How much would adding more memory actually cost?

    4. Slightly better high ISO image quality shown by a higher ISO Mark sensor rating number. Why? Just because Nikon will likely take this opportunity to "tweek" the software a bit even though it is using the same sensor.

    5. No changes to the body, just some easy changes to internal parts and software and a new name so they can get away from the bad reputation of the D600. The "ultimate fix:" identify the offending part, replace it, "tweek" any other reported and complained about weaknesses, give the result a new name and change a slow selling body into a fast selling body. The D600 will become an historical curiosity and a collectors body since it was produced in limited numbers for only a short time. And once all the internal dust is cleaned out of a D600 it will be a perfectly fine camera.

They may add a lot of new marketing-related "upgrades," but I suspect the only real change is #1 on your list. To only change that though, would be a pretty big admission that there was an issue in the first place. Seems to me it's a bit early in their product cycle to really make any substantial changes to the D600. They just need to put some distance between the new product and the reputation of the old product.

I think we're saying the same thing. What I meant say was that all changes beyond fixing the spotting issue will likely be superficial. (who knows, maybe it will now come in red?)

Yea, what about those who purchased the D600? One thing Nikon could do is to discount (50% off) the D610 to for people who purchased the D600. Fat chance....

Nikon has no obligation to give a discount, what they are obligated to do is fix the cameras under warranty. Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree. But it was just a thought. Nordstrom would do something like that, maybe.

I would imagine this is just a fix upgrade. I would venture to guess that the parts they are fixing the D600 will be the parts used from the start in the D610. They just gave this an upgrade to get away from the reputation the D600 has. A better autofocus would be a nice bonus though but don't expect it.

The second generation of the D600 should be what it should have been from the beginning, a D7100 with a D600 sensor. I can't imagine Nikon would release a camera with just a fix to the dirty sensor issue. A D800 with a 24 MP sensor would also be nice. I only hope that my D600 doesn't become worthless with the release of the new D610.

Overall it is just a marketing move to close the chapter D600, which is perceived as the "dirt on sensor camera". If you look at the SB910 transition you can see that there will be minor changes, it was a new button and a different menu when they closed the "overheating flash" chapter. The core of the SB910 is mostly the same.

So will anyone be pre-ordering the D610 ? if its a D7100 with the 24MP FF sensor?

After (assuming it's over) the debacle that was the D600, pre-ordering is surely a thing of the past!

I expect that the dust problem will be fixed, no change to size of body, and the smaller pattern for the AF system will be corrected. No other changes expected.

I'd expect something ~ heartyfisher, donaldjose et al are saying.

    1) fix dust/oil
    2) 51-pt focus & greater area
    3) other 7100 software features (OK button zoom, HDR, 5-frame bracketing)

    Hoping:
    4) larger multi-function pad. D7100 is okay, the D600 is too small

    Uncertain:
I'm not sure I'm a fan of the D7100's i button. I kind of like the D600's instant access to Picture Styles. The buffer seems decent in the D600 vs the D7100, not sure that's critical. They're capable of it... maybe a 30mp sensor :-P

I don't see any thing more than 24 MP, a 30mP sensor would be really somehting.

Given the short time it has taken for this out of sequence announcement not allowing any new R&D, I am certain the new release will just fix the problems. There are too many good reasons for the D610 to not be too close to the D800 for Nikon to go there.

but what about the D810 :)

D610... what the D600 should have been? But, maybe they are going to add features so as to make it look like a different body and not just a "fix" of the D600.

And, this may be the problem facing the D400 intro, is Nikon working on the correction for the D600.....who knows?

My hunch is that the D610 won't be much different than the D600 except better quality control. From a Marketing perspective, they need at least one or two improvements to advertise that the D610 is an improvement to the D600. Nikon doesn't' want to say they fixed the D600 issues and are now calling it the D610. Think about that mess.

I'm along the same lines as benji205 - Nothing really new, maybe a few options from the D7100 added and that is it - same sensor (or slightly upgraded.) Nikon did something similar with the D40x with the D60. The D40x had some major issues with it's sensor overheating and it got such a bad rep, that they replaced it with the same slightly upgraded D60 mid cycle. In reality, the dust/oil seems to be a manufacturing not a systems fix and with Nikon's number$ not being good, Canon releasing (as usual schedule for them) bodies mid-Nikon cycle, they feel the need to boost sales somehow.

Just like the One series (J/V) Nikon missed customer's demands for a full frame 12-18mp high ISO camera (re-done D3s) and pumped out the D800 & D600 with much more MP, and not that much more head room for ISO over the D700. If Nikon was really smart they would put the D3s sensor in the D610 and watch sales rocket. I would probably grab two - one for my "ram-around" camera, and a second as my back-up for work.

One thing for sure is that used D700 prices will drop like a rock. That is what I'm waiting for to add one as my backup/2nd body/ ram around camera. Good use for all my D300 accessories (batteries/grip) that I have laying around.

Can you imagine if they removed the IR sensor? I am pretty sure its not going to happen. I think they are just going to address some of the petty problems D600 owners have been complaining about since its fall 2012 release. If in fact the D610 is released the prices of the D600 will fall to original Canon 5D full frame prices where I live I bet...
