Agreed, it's always a trade off, but I do know the servos suffer from overshoot and retry, whereas the steppers can be moved to a specific position. Wanna arm wrestle?

On this subject? Yeah, c'mon big guy! LOL! Only badly designed or cheap closed loop servo's suffer from overshoot or oscillation.

Well I've seen my Nikon gold rings do exactly that! Look I'll take the 10x increase in focus speed, even if Nikon said it was powered by magic pixie dust :-) @heartyfisher, I agree there has to be a new DX camera behind this otherwise ridiculous announcement.

    Maybe a mirrorless DX?

    A D400?!? Just kidding.
  • spraynprayspraynpray Posts: 6,545Moderator
A nice idea, in fact that was my first thought but that is a consumer kit lens so it looks like a consumer camera sadly.

Ha! Looks like hearty nailed it. The D500 has built-in camera shake compensation for 4K video. So the non-VR lens is targeted at video users, who need the noiseless function and faster autofocus.

I wonder if it is de-clicked then?

  • IronheartIronheart Posts: 3,017Moderator
It's a G lens, so it has no ring, and the lever never has any clicks. I'm assuming the D500 has the necessary actuators to drive the aperture during recording.

Is it just me or do I see a FM style pentaprism on the D500 and D5? The corners look chopped off a bit.

Maybe it's my stupid nostalgia trying to egg me into getting a new camera haha.

To be very honest, I haven't even fully figured out the D7000 AF system yet, and it scares me how much I would need to figure out for the D500.

That being said, I don't have fast lenses... maybe I should work on that first. :D

You won't need them with ISO 3,280,000:

"For extreme low-light ability, the ISO range is expandable from 50 (Lo-1) to a staggering ISO 3,280,000 (Hi-5), offering near-night vision capability that’s well beyond the visibility of the human eye."

    And the D500 has a not-too-shabby 1,640,000 ISO. f8 and be there.

Haha, I was trying to find a slightly more responsible way to spend $2000, rather than buy a completely new body...

Invest in lenses of course! :D

BTW, it looks like the D500 won't come with a pop up flash, which is hugely useful to me for fill sometimes, especially for macro. I don't own an external flash, so there's that too. I guess that's the trade off for having that massive viewfinder.

So I emailed Choco Passion UK to see if they would ship me Chocolate Nikon's to the US...... I wonder if I could get the chocolate mold for a Nikon F somewhere and just make them myself.

Scroll to the right on the main page. Right arrow on the products pull-down menu.

You can technically get there if you bookmarked the page like me...
    http://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/camera-lenses/all-lenses/index.page

But you are correct that it isn't available from the (javascript controlled) drop down menu on the top of the page. I couldn't give you a reason why. That's up to the product managers at Nikon.
