I bought a new desktop 4 months ago and am extremely pleased with the 256Gb SSD + 1TB HD. The load time and shutdown time is extremely fast. I did splurge with 24 Gb of RAM. Opening large files is quick. Love it.

Aagh! I upgraded the new machine from the horror that is Win 8.1 but win 10 is not great so far. Macafee is horrible too - I'm deinstalling it and using defender.

Why the heck do they have to change the GUI? It's pointless. Stuff that used to be top right is now top left etc. etc. OK, they find new ways to make it work better, but why change the GUI? ~X(

Mac definitely has preloaded software, but it's definitely not as pushy or as intrusive as Windows preloaded software. My dad's Windows 8 PC has a lot of trial Microsoft Office and Dell branded software that he'd never use. Plus there's a free trial of MacAfee, along with that stupid browser toolbar they ask you to install...

I can't wrap my head around using a Windows PC anymore, the last OS that I was familiar with was Windows XP.

Agree, System 7 was good. When I got the new CPU got 8.1 and everyone said it was bad and hard to learn before I purchased it. For me, I had no issues making the change and really like the functionally of 8.1. Have not played with 10 at any of the stores yet but don't intend to upgrade any time soon to 10.

That's why building your own PC was so much nicer than buying the off the shelf junk that the likes of Dell/HP etc sold. A fresh install from an OEM copy of Windows is just as nice as working with a fresh install of Mac OS or Linux.
If I take a good photo it's not my camera's fault.

You can get a clean install of windows 10 providing you already have a registered copy of windows. You can download a media creation tool from Microsoft. I used it and didn't get all the crap you get with new PC's. So far no problems. I guess it's been about a month or more.

Here is a link from CNET on how to use it and install if your interested. http://www.cnet.com/how-to/clean-install-windows-10/

Note that 'clean installs' often don't leave your machine with the spec it had before so you have to know a lot about PC's to know the implications of what you get and what you don't get with a clean install of Windows. An example is if it has embedded express cache, it can end up without that vital feature working. You do't get any warning pop-ups, the machine just doesn't go very quickly when doing complex editing tasks.

Any time I buy a new laptop, the first thing I do is make the "restore cd/dvd" from their hidden agenda partition on the hard drive and then power the laptop off, remove the bloatware filled hard drive and install a brand new higher capacity, higher speed hard drive or SSD...... There are some things even low level formating does not remove from factory installed hard drives.....

It makes all the difference in the world when you do a fresh Windows install on a "non-contaminated" hard drive.

Snowleopard +1. Just what I did new hard drive new windows install. No complaints here.

That is a good idea @snowleopard. I have made my recovery USB drive, but as I have a perfectly good SSD for the moment, I'll bear your suggestion in mind for later on in the machines life.

I am getting old...should have started a new thread on the D5. Maybe later today.

Anyway I see KR has started his place holder for the D5 review. Check out his D5 picture placeholder at http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d5.htm

I just found my floppy disks for Mac System 7.5.3....... I just need to find a mac to install it on..... Only mac I will ever consider a "Mac" almost un-hackable...... Mac's these days can be hacked in minutes.

Happy belated Thanksgiving! I hope you guys picked up some nice gear!

I picked up a Nexus 5x and a Nvidia Shield TV... both of which are severely back ordered, but should arrive at some point.

I also updated my dad's computer to Windows 10, it's refreshing to see how much more intuitive the user interface is in comparison to Windows 8.

I have a 23" HD screen which is doing nothing and so I was thinking I would like to use it to display images as individual shots and slideshows. Is there any gadget available that is small, cheap and would do that with images from a USB drive?

    Thanks for any help guys.
