Sandisk used to offer a player that I used with SD or CF cards. Not sure about USB drives. Been to many years to remember. I used it at events and it was advertised as a wedding tool.
Happy belated Thanksgiving! I hope you guys picked up some nice gear!
I also updated my dad's computer to Windows 10, it's refreshing to see how much more intuitive the user interface is in comparison to Windows 8.
Almost as good as Win 7. Have you tried the mail app yet? It's rubbish. :-/
No I have not. It's my dad's laptop, so as long as he can surf the web he's happy. My main computer is a Mac.
I have a 23" HD screen which is doing nothing and so I was thinking I would like to use it to display images as individual shots and slideshows. Is there any gadget available that is small, cheap and would do that with images from a USB drive?
Thanks for any help guys.
I think it would be easiest to use an old laptop, but that doesn't solve your problem right?
I guess what you could do is use a streaming stick, like a Fire TV stick or a Google Chromecast and use screen mirroring to show a continuous stream of photos.
Either that, or you'd have to probably hack something together on a Raspberry Pi, but that would mean you would probably need to buy components individually and do some coding.
@NSXTypeR Coding? @-) Easier for me to fly to the moon...
Try looking at this. I just now found out that Western Digital is buying out Sandisk... Didn't find my old unit anywhere online. It was simple and sold for about $40. Simple to use with a chip and rgb cable to any TV that had that connection. Out of date tech I must think.
OK, on a totally different note from the normal rumors fare. I need a new lens for a special purpose. I need the front of the lens about 7' from a flat surface that is to be copied in sections and stitched together. ie fine art copy and reproduction. The big guys will use a Cruse Scanner which hits the $150,000 or so mark now. The other option is medium format but still costly compared to the D810 I own. The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED looks like what I need to me. Used in manual mode it should work. I have an engineer working the concept now of using an X/Y axis mount for the camera and a pair of polarized strobes for consistent light in a dim blackout environment. Does anyone know of a better option for the lens part? I've looked at the Zeiss 100mm Milvus and the 105 Nikon. The Nikon 105 does leave $'s for a new D7200.

@FreezeAction: The Nikon 60mm D is a lens that was derived from an industrial design IIRC and it has virtually zero distortion. From my experience, it will beat the 105 for sharpness easily at around f2.8 - f4. My D was slightly sharper than my G, but the much faster and silent AF of the G makes it a no-brainer for run-and-gun macro shooting which I do a lot of.
I'm surprised that article was as short as it is... You can also look at your firewall to see what is talking to big brother. I was all set to upgrade, but an holding off to see if Microsoft eases up on the info. I doubt they will though.
I think there are also a few programs that help with this. I'm not sure which ones they are so you will have to do a search.
This thread was originally started for little general comments and postings to video links that were interesting but probably won't need much comment. .. that don't fit into a topic or warrant its own thread.. its not really for lazy people ... ;-) ... there have been several posts lately that would be more suitably posted in their own threads. ..maybe we should retitle the thread?

Hold on a minute, but we aren't allowed to start new threads because 110% of the time there are already 500 threads about the topic to begin with and then 5 months later when everyone calms down, Oh wait..... my mistake, that should have been a separate thread.
I actually find this quite entertaining. "I like photographing in tunnels, but I don't live in one" and you can quote me on that.

I love my macro lenses for reproduction work, but if you want to go old school, I take a Nikon PB-6E and a Nikon EL-Nikkor 50mm F/2.8 since I don't have a fancy scanner.
The EL Nikkor's were used on Nikon Enlargers and have a "Flat Field of View" that is what is key for reproduction work.
First opinion and second thoughts from today's activity. The local camera dealer has Nikon, Tamron, Sony, and a tripod manufacture at their east side store for 7 hours and tomorrow for 7 hours. The number of people that came in purchased new cameras was amazing during the 45 minutes I spent talking to the Nikon and Tamron regional representatives.
I got that warm and fuzzy feeling that the DSLR was not dead. Saw 3 D3300 sold at $399.99 and one D5500. There were lots of interest in the D5500 and only a few lookers at the D7100/D7200, D750 and D4s. They had the $699.99 price on the D7100 and no takers.
Truly this is good news for people that want a better camera than a point and shoot and a cell phone.

Nikon launched VR and non-VR versions of the DX 18-55 kit lens today using stepper-motor AF technology. I have to say the outgoing version is actually pretty good for IQ so what's it all about? My guess is cost-reduction plus a small tweak to IQ. I find it almost annoying that when we are desperate for 4 stop VR and an optics refresh on the venerable 17-55 f2.8 that they come out with something like this. Really.
Maybe sevencrossing was right and that there will never be another Nikon pro grade DX to challenge the 7DII which would be a real shame IMHO. That crop sensor Canon is flying off the shelves. Just about every Canon shooter I now either has one or is going to get one.
The stepper motors are to solve the noise problem and the refocus speed on video. The stepper motor can smoothly move precisely to the next focus point, vs having to rack in and out to re-aquire focus. They are likely also cheaper than the silent wave focus motor.
Update from the main blog. I guess great minds think alike: "The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR accelerates phase-detection AF speeds by approximately 10 times and contrast-detection AF speeds by approximately 3.5 times. With a 25% reduction in noise within the AF drive, this lens is great for shooting stills and even better for videos."
@Ironheart: I am getting severe warnings from my BS detection beepers that go off often when I read marketing hype. DC servo systems are always quieter and capable of being faster and more precise than stepper based systems. Stepper systems have always been the cheaper way of achieving accurate position but crude by comparison. I just think that it would be bad business to write 'we did it to save money'.
Let's face it, if it were a better system they wouldn't be introducing it on a cheap kit lens would they? Why not the 300 PF?

@ FreezeAction: That Micca unit looks interesting, but again it looks like it needs a TV not a monitor? Or am I being thick? ">

@FreezeAction: That looks very interesting - I wonder if the PSU will take 230/240V..
EDIT: Looks like it does.
