Heartyfisher....thank you for posting that photo over in the Rainbow thread. Had to find a way to keep it moving. The indigo/violet or purple image is always a hard one to find.

    Way, way, way off topic-

    Toyota AE86

I haven't painted since high school art class, and it was very enjoyable.

I figured I'd post it here. I wonder how many other members paint too.

@NSX, did you paint a 1984 Nissan 200sx? I would have guessed 1991 Honda Prelude, but the back isn't long enough.

Other than photography, not much more. The graduate school residence halls had a paint night, so I went to town on it.

I tried to do my best impression of a Toyota AE86 haha, but at least you got the flip up headlight part.

    Thanks for the comment.

Although I don't often agree with KR's reviews, one area he excels is tables and comparisons.

He just posted a history of Nikon Digital cameras and it's well done. Check it out here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/dslr.htm

Is it evil for me to consider a D7200 purchase if I'm looking for a spare battery for the D7000? I figured it's a pretty justified purchase because it's the last of the super D70 line of cameras, as opposed to the dumbed down D500 camera. I figured, a new EN-EL15 is $50, before tax. That's about 1/16th the cost of a new D7200. I figured that's fairly justified.

Eh, maybe this is just GAS.

Just curious, why does a wide angle need such a fast aperture?

I assume a 14mm would mostly be used by landscape photographers, most of which use fairly small apertures for DOF purposes anyway.

Nightscapes/astro. You need speed more than ever as the shutter speed is related to focal length. 14 seconds is the max for a 14mm (FX) before you see slotting. increasing ISO above about 3200 is too noisy so the only way is to use a fast lens.

This afternoon I was at a Tamron "First Look" on their two new lens...the 18-400mm crop sensor lens and their 2nd generation 24-70mm F2.8 Full Frame lens at our local camera dealer. Here are my impressions of each.

18-400mm all purpose Canon or Nikon crop sensor lens:
    Size: Good
    AF speed: average
Zoom ring location: excellent, to the front with a nice size collar.
Focus ring location: Good, towards the rear, narrow but nice feel.
Pro's: Size and finish. Lock zoom so no telescoping. Button shape. Filter size. Weight
Con's: The zoom ring was slightly stiff but had bidden between 50mm and 100mm. I could not rotate it with two fingers, had to wrap my hand around the zoom collar to change focal length. I though it was just this lens so I grabbed the Canon version of this lens that was on a Canon and it was not as stiff but it did bind between 50 and 100mm. Said something to the Tamron representatives and he said its the cams shifting at that focal point. It may or may not get better with age. He has had the lens for less than 10 days.

Also, the lens extends multiple tubes as it pushes out and collapses when turned the other way. It's going to be an air puller.

Comments: This will be interesting to see how the IQ and resolution compares to other lens. Note, the dealer had 4 in stock that morning and by the middle of the afternoon they were sold out at about $650 USD. It was shocking that they had a "bonus rebate" if purchased today at that dealer. As the salesman said, for a bonus rebate during the launch week this is really rare. They continued to accept orders and wrote it ups with today's date so they got the extra $25 off. This lens is on a regional back order due to demand.

IMHO, the binding of the zoom collar stopped me from considering this lens further. I cannot live with that tightness and the binding in the 50 to 100mm range.

See next message for my assessment of the new 24-70mm lens.

As I indicated in the previous message, I went to the Tamron "Keep On Clicking Tour" at the local dealer to see their new lens. In the previous message I covered the new ASPC crop sensor 18-400mm lens (27 to 600mm equivalent).

I asked what the difference was between the new 2nd generation and the initial offering and the Tamron representative said, faster AF speed, better weather proofing between the front and rear of the lens, Vibration Reduction is certified by some institute at 5F stops and AF motor is quieter.

Here are my comments on the 2nd generation Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 lens.
Size: Good size, huge 80mm filter...it could have been 84mm, not sure of size.
AF speed: much faster than the 1st generation.
Zoom Ring size is very good.
Focus ring size is good, larger than the 18-600. It's also at the front of the lens.
Pro's: Nice finish, it feels solid like a professional lens. $60 for the base for firmware updates. Less than half the price of the current Nikon 24-70 lens. Better feel than the first generation.
    Con's: The filter size.

Again, forgot to bring a memory card along. It will be interesting to see how this lens test for IQ and dynamic range and sharpness edge to center.

Another shocker, Tamron had a $50 Bonus Rebate only good for today. This lens is on back order in both Nikon and Canon lens mounts.
