Today, Dec 15, on the main blog are the preliminary specs for the new D7200. Here are the specs with my comments:

New 24MP APS-C sensor - of course, no surprises
Nikon D750 styled body with a tilting screen - Good move with the tilt screen. After using one on my D750, I like it.
Expeed 4 processor - okay
MultiCAM 3500DX2 autofocus system - not sure if this is the same or different than the D7100.
51 AF points - of course
Built-in Wi-Fi - no surprise here. Nikon is moving away from the dongle to the built in. The D750 Wi-Fi is better than the D7100+dongle.
6fps - surprise. Expected 6.5 fps.
Buffer: 16 RAW+JPG - okay. I will have to look this one up so see the D7100 rating. Wonder what the JPEG rating is?
Video: 1080p @60 and 720p @120 (not sure about 4k) - Okay, kind of expected 4K but this should work.
Video aperture will be adjustable during live view - okay, like the D750 I assume.
Expected announcement in the first few months of 2015 - This was everyone projection - announced at CES or Feb Photo show. Consistent with what the Nikon representative told me Friday. Still expect it to be announced in January.

To me seems a little ho-hum. I really like the D7100, but have switched to the D800 as my primary camera even though I'm a birder. I was thinking the D7200 might be competitive with the 7dm2 in terms of speed, but according to these specs it doesn't seem like it. I'm sure the new 24 MP sensor should be getting close to the last generation of FF cameras as far as ISO performance. Unless the specs are wrong, I will be sticking with my D800 for longer than I thought. I finally got my grip today so I can shoot at 6 FPS in in DX mode with a 35 shot buffer in 14 bit lossless compressed. I can live with the slightly worse AF performance in the D800...

If these are indeed the final specs I am a bit disappointed.

I am hoping for more a D810 style body.
Tilting screen - I like the one on my D5100 I use it for horizontal shots and have never used it for low or high shots yet.
I have often looked at my shots at 4fps and sometimes wished I had the one between them so hope for 8fps.
Writing to UHS II cards would solve a lot of buffer problems but isn't likely.
Video - never used it so not much interest.

Matching pairs of cameras seems sensible to me. D750 and the D7200, and the D810 and a D9300. That could make a lot of happy customers for Nikon. What do you think?

I am waiting to upgrade from a D5100 so will jut wait and see what is available.

    Me too. :D
Right now I am keeping the D7100 for any shooting longer than 200mm. I'll look at it when it comes out but don't expect to buy the D7200.

@retread - understand where your coming from but I don't think that many people expected the D7200 to be in a pro sized body. There were wishful thinkers but I sure didn't expect a larger body. It really looks like an incremental upgrade to a fine D7100.

I never put much weight to the tilting screen until I got the D750. Lets just say I am learning to really like it so I understand your comment on horizontal shots even though the D750 doesn't turn in that fashion. I expect but don't know if the D7200 tilt screen will be like the D5300 or D750.

The D750 and D7200/D7100/D7000 make a great pair and compliment each other. For outstanding scenery your right the D810 make a great Trio. If the D9300 every materializes then drop the D7000/D7100/D7200 and you got 4 great cameras. More than most people would buy. I really believe you are going to see lots of shooters using a DX D5300 or D7xxx and the D610 or D750. Best of both the DX and FX world.

If the spec's holdup, then this would be a worth upgrade for those that choose to skip the D7000-D7100 path.

If price within the same price range as the D7100, then I think this will be a nice addition for those that are still thinking of adding a DX body to their bag.

These all fall very much in line with realistic expectations. The moment we saw the D750, with its controls and added WiFi, one could predict the D7200 would follow suit. Leverage much of the same hardware. Hopefully they'll be smart and give it identical handling and menu navigation.

Then the D610 will match the D3300. Hmmm.
D810 matches the... yeah, maybe room for a D300 replacement, since this D7200 doesn't hit those points.
Kind of wonders how/if the D5x00 fits... ah right, as Nikon's money-maker. Still... doesn't quite fit into a nice well-thought-out compartment. Ah well. So much for clean categorization.

As a recent D7100'er, I guess it makes sense to sit this one out and save for a D750... collect lenses....

I used to have the d7000. Hesitantly upgraded to the 7100 but really appreciate the larger sensor and the better af. I Doubt their will be enough for me to get the 7200 with these specs. With the 1.3 crop on the 7100 you can already shoot 7fps. Now the d810 will shoot 7fps full DX with the grip. If the base is 6fps for the 7200 that is disappointing.

Yep, I'll jump the 7200. Even though it's menus and facilities my be a better match for my D750, there isn't enough difference in the spex to make it worthwhile. I'm buying glass instead.

Bet its called the D7500 ( D5500 is anounced) does not interest me unless it was super quiet and I have mine locked at 2fps for blink avoidance. Tilt mirror would be handy for when I am not supoosed to be taking pics but not worn the D7100 out yet. Pass.

I'm sure the new 24 MP sensor should be getting close to the last generation of FF cameras as far as ISO performance.
It might get close, or even good enough, for a lot of people, but when it come to ISO performance. the equivalent Full frame will always be better

    Perfect for me :-)
    I currently use a 2 camera 2 lense kit. D7000 with 70-200F4 and D610 with 24-70 F2.8 VC. Love the versatility ! gets me FOV of 24 - 300 ! (actually a bit wider because the tamron 24-70 is a bit wider than 24mm.)

    * AF of my old D7000 is ok but is a bit wonky at times for general use.
    * decided to keep my D610 and skip D750

Which leaves a small weakness in low light AF in my system.

The D7200 is expected to AF better ! Will work great with my main lense the 70-200 F4. Upgrading to D7200 will mean
    * a nice jump in MP for me from 16 to 24.
    * Nice jump in lowlight in DX but not my system as a whole since I have the D610 which has a great lowlight sensor.
    * 1.3 DX crop, Gets me a 2X crop mode which extends my system range to 400mm. plus I have a 1.4TC that makes a very respectable 560mm capability at F5.6 ! I have been using my nikon1V1 for tele shots of birds but this setup should be heaps better.!
    * Much better AF with my 70-200 F4 (and 1.3 crop) should open up lot of options with bird photos and other wildlife!

Yup.. upgrading my D7000 to the D7200 looks like a great addition to my system !

PS look like nikon has left "space" for a D300 replacement !!

A Nikon D7100 with the specs of the D750 would be very interesting. The main issue for me, is that the af should be like that of the D750, because I am not really pleased with the af of the d7100, too many shots of moving targets are out of focus. The D750 is really much better. I really like the outputs of the D7100, give it the reliable af of the D750 and the shutter sound of the D810 and this will definitely be my next body.

depends .. if the D7200 gets the expected boost in high ISO capability. It should beat the D800 handily and would probably almost match the D600/D610 and D810. so the only FX cameras that would be clearly better would be the D750, Df, D4 and D4s ..

Great comments everyone. I can't sleep so I am reading these on my cell. Will comment further today. The D7200 will meet expectations of many looking to upgrade their D3xxx or D5xxx and D7000. Right now don't expect too many D7100 owners to upgrade.

I think that if you compare the difference between a D90 and a D700 (noise-wise) and then do the same with a D7200 any current comparable full frame (so perhaps D4/D4s/DF excepted (well you gotta get something for all that money eh?)), then you will see that not only has that difference got smaller, it got to the point where it almost doesn't matter. I swapped out my D7100 and D750 for a night shot the other night (same settings, subject and corrected focal length) and was pretty surprised by how far DX has come.

That is what I am expecting. And the D7200 should be better than the D7100. I would expect a similar difference between the D610 -> D750. for high ISO the key things would be
    * Expeed 4 - faster processor, better noise processing.
    * New sensor - We dont really know how much more advanced it is. ie is it a small tweak or has it got more new tech than even the D750 has. Has it got the undefined D810 tech that allows more light into the edges of the sensor? has it got the ISOCell style tech from the NX1? they may need to reply to the great specs of the NX1 sensor. Maybe its just more advanced video capabilities.

....., it got to the point where it almost doesn't matter.
One thing I learnt on NRF

what matters to me, may not matter to others

I am also sure, things that matter to them do not matter to me

We all have different needs and different budgets

I really do need a HASSELBLAD H4D-200MS with the 28mm f/4 HCD Lens

but sady it is way outside my budget

Interesting that KR writes "The 7D Mk II seems as good as last year's full-frame." Probably part of his usual over-exaggeration.

The DxOMark score for the D3 was 81. The D3300 has a score of 82. So in general current DX overall sensor IQ equals last generation FX sensor IQ. However, the D3 low light ISO sports score was 2290 while the D3300 low light ISO sports score is only 1256. Thus, current DX ISO is still about one stop behind last generation FX in the metric of noise at high ISO. At some point the latest DX sensors will be able to score as well as the D3 did in DxOMark's Sports low light ISO score. I don't think we will see that in the D7200 but the main NR blog is predicting a new sensor so maybe we will. I do hope when Nikon can do this it will produce a D400 with specs which exceed those of the Cannon 5DMarkII.

Full frame will always be about a stop better in low light performance. That is its potential and the reason is based on the laws of physics, nothing more.

Any technical upgrade that can improve DX can also improve FX. It there is a certain DX camera that is closer to a certain FX camera in ISO performance by less than a stop, it is because the FX camera in question does not have the latest tech.

I say this because some people seem to have the notion that either "DX is catching up to FX" or that "the difference is small enough not to matter".

If FX stays current, DX will always be one stop behind. This is fundamental physics, not engineering or marketing. And to those who care, a one stop improvement will always be huge.
  • heartyfisherheartyfisher Posts: 3,186Member
@westendfoto. and i still agree with most of what you say except that the DX tech more rapid iteration and competition will always narrow that gap to less than 1 stop on the average given any point in time.
