Hello Peter...it is a welcoming news to have a video journalist as a member. I'm sure you will be able to provide some valuable input on some of our conversation.

Bonjour Althought I've been a reader of NR for many years now, I never joined the forum... Until today. I've been shooting with Nikon gear since the D1X and up to the D4s today... I'm really used to the handling and controls, and for my speciality (pool & billiards) the low-light performance of Nikon's bodies is really a plus. And I get technical support from Nikon France (NPS) for some of my shoots.
My work is featured on many websites or magazines such as AZBilliards and Billiards Digest. I shoot most of the important events on the calendar for editorial or commercial purposes. The most popular are the Mosconi Cup, the World Pool Masters and the World Cup of Pool, for which I am the official staff photographer.
Until I relaunch a proper website you can see my work in the public albums of my facebook fanpage
I am from the Philippines but am working in Saudi Arabia as a WP QA/QC Welding and Piping Specialist. I just joined NR a couple of hours ago. My interest in photography started just last month when I bought a Nikon D5300 with an 18-55mm VR II kit lens. I also bought 55-200mm VR for a telephoto and I wish to ask NR Members to give me advice what other lenses I still have to buy as basic requirements for a beginner like me.
@lasher - have you tried the Nikon 1? i know it's not up to full frame quality, but I had some good experience with it and once you mount a telephoto through ft1 it gets you closer by 2.7 times.
Good Morning from Harrisburg PA! My name is Dave and I am new here. I'm perusing the lovely world of Digital photography and am looking to get my first DSLR (likely the 5300). I have shot everything from a 4x5 to a medium format Bronica ETR series to my Nikon D90. I have had PnS's in the past but I am looking on moving up in the world.
If I may interject a question at this point, I was kind of looking for a recommendation. Costco has a kit with both the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses in it, or do you think I might be better off getting a kit with just the 18-140? I do shoot pretty much everything from landscapes to portraits.
@Gr8dave37: Welcome to NRF. The Costco kit is a neat bundle. However, I would personally go with just a body only and then get the proper lenses for your needs. Have look around our forum and you will find many conversations addressing your needs.

I'm George, and I'm an amateur photographer, although I did a little portrait work back in the 70's. I used my Minolta XK. I still love taking pictures. I have a D80 now, which I love dearly, but it's broken with the err and I'm contemplating fixing it myself. I'm retired now so I have no money but plenty of time. I owned a repair shop fixing VCR's and camcorders back in the 90's, so I have some experience. I must say, I'm a little disappointed in Nikon, it seems all their SLRs seem to have a weak point. My D80 only has about 12000 actuation's and it broke. It is supposed to go 50,000 MTBF. I have an F3 body and it still works. I guess they don't build them like they used to. Sigh... But I still love em...
PS I should have mentioned, in my professional life, I was/am an electrical engineer. I spent most of my career as a Quality Engineer, qualifying computer designs. I did a lot of root cause analysis for failures, so I get a bit miffed when I see failures happening because of poor design. (Like the gear that always fails in the D80).
Hi Folks, I'm retired, like to travel and photography has been one of my main hobbies for about 60 years. I bought my first Nikon, a Nikkorex-F with a 50 mm lens back in 1960. I had a wet darkroom with a Leica Focomat 1c enlarger for many years (I still have the enlarger) but now I'm strictly digital. I'm sad to learn and be a victim of Niikon's policy of "built-in obsolescence". I purchased a 70-200 mm VR zoom in 2007. The optics are astounding, the auto focus died last year and Nikon wants $600.00 to repair it - Nikon's cost to manufacture a new lens. I heard the same is happening to the 200-400 mm zooms. I'm not going to buy that lens, I'm saving my money for repairs. All the best. Russ

As to sending money.... Sounds like a symptom of NAS. (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome )

Welcome!
We'll have you in a D4 before the end of the Summer! :-)
My best,

one lens you should start with is 35/1.8.

I'm usually in Oakland, CA, USA
Many images are mine up on http://www.haitiaction.net/index.htmlwhere I have also done a bit of the writing of late
Most recent Nikon is a D4 with several f1.4 primes and a 28-300 zoom for run and gun content
I wish Nikon would reintroduce a Thunderbolt Coolscan RAW that can handle 4x5 how about that as a new topic?
RAW
My mother gave me the initials, but I've since earned the name…
